WINSTED, MN – The mayor of Winsted Steve Stotko proclaimed two different days to be HLWW boys’ basketball team day and HLWW girls’ basketball team day in honor of their great seasons

Laker Boys

The Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted boys basketball team was given April 8, 2009 as the team’s own special day through a proclamation made by Winsted’s Mayor Steve Stotko at Tuesday’s council meeting. The boys were also presented a plaque from the City of Winsted by Stotko for a great basketball season.

“As the team moved through the season, they developed the skills and teamwork that made them one of the best basketball teams in the state of Minnesota,” Stotko read from the plaque. Besides winning the 2009 championship in Section 5AA, the boys took home the fourth place trophy in the Class 2A state tournament.

After the team received its plaque, the boys’ basketball coach, Chad Gagnon, gave each of  the council members a team T-shirt.  “We appreciated the fire department that led us out of town and greeted us when we came back (from state), and we appreciate everybody’s support,” Gagnon said.

Laker Girls

At the Winsted City Council meeting Tuesday, Mayor Steve Stotko also proclaimed April 7, 2009 as the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted Girls’ Basketball Team Day and presented a plaque to  the team in recognition of the outstanding basketball season it had.  “Through teamwork, dedication, and hard work, the team finished the season with a remarkable 29-4 record,” Winsted Mayor Steve Stotko read from the plaque.  Those 29 wins are a school record, according to Aaron Schultz, Herald Journal sports writer.

Not only were the girls 2009 champions in Section 5AA but they also took second at the Class 2A state tournament. Jason Kuehn, the girls’ basketball coach, gave each of the council members a team T-shirt, and told them the season was, “Something I won’t forget.”  Kuehn was also appreciative of the Winsted Fire Department’s escort to and from town when the team traveled to the state tournament.
