WINSTED, MN – The 27th Annual Winsted Karate Tournament is set to go
Why Shotokan karate? Why Winsted Karate Club?
Traditional Japanese Shotokan Karate was developed in early 20th century Japan, its basis being hundreds, if not thousands of years of knowledge in the martial arts. Methods of hands and feet alone as weapons were developed in Asia by warriors, monks and others interested in survival in a dangerous world.
In Shotokan karate, teaching ‘empty hand” karate means developing the body and mind into an effective weapon. Tradition and philosophy say “no first attack.” Shotokan karate is for defense and self protection, not offense and attack.
A student at our club will benefit in many ways from studying karate. Learning self defense brings self-confidence. The physical training improves strength from the discipline expected of students. Competition is here for the students who are interested,

but required of none of our students.
Our tournament will show most aspects of basic karate. You’ll find it interesting and quite exciting.
Beginner classes are offered on a regular basis. Beginner classes run from 6-7 p.m. Monday and Thursday. General classes are 7 to 8:30 p.m., also on Monday and Thursday. The location is the Winsted Elementary School.
