WATERTOWN, MAYER, MN – Christmas arrived early this year for the music department at Watertown-Mayer High School with the gift of a Steinway Boston piano, the Carver County News reported.

The school’s benefactor, though, was not the jolly man in red, but rather the William Beery family.

In August, William Beery donated $32,000 to the school district to purchase the grand piano in memory of his wife, Lawraine, who passed away in 2008. In the few months the piano has resided at its new home at the performing arts center, students and community members have already enjoyed the piano’s smooth tones.

The Beery family was one that embraced music and the arts, thanks in large part to Lawraine’s nudging, the Carver County news reported.
