HOWARD LAKE, MN – Brandon Torres, 17, of Howard Lake has been working his way up the ranks in Boy Scouts since the second grade. As he was brainstorming ideas for projects that would qualify toward earning Eagle Scout rank, he took a closer look at a park in his neighborhood.
He explained that as he was taking his dogs for a walk near Lake Ridge Park in Howard Lake, he walked through the park and thought, “Hmmm, this could use some help.”
“I’d like to move a few pine trees to face the north to block the wind,” Torres said. “I’d like to get some sumac and heavy bushes, also, a grill, a garbage can, and picnic tables.”
He is currently finalizing his plans, and will soon approach the city council for final approval. He will then need to fundraise for the trees, shrubs,  grill, garbage can, and picnic tables. Anyone wishing to donate toward the project may call him at (320) 543-9488.

treWINSTED, MN – Winsted resident Kayla Goreham beat more than 2,500 others in a contest hosted by Minnesota Forest Industries (MFI) and Minnesota McDonald’s restaurants recently.

The contest takes the annual 55,000-seedling giveaway on Arbor Day one step further by inviting people to apply for one of five large, free trees to be planted in their yards.

More than 2,500 Minnesotans responded, and July 17, McDonald’s and MFI – assisted by Midland Nursery in Buffalo – planted a tree in the yard of Winsted resident Kayla Goreham.

Goreham, who lives at 438 Lake Trail in Winsted, had the choice of any tree to be planted, and she selected an autumn blaze maple.
The other four winners of the statewide large-tree contest are:William Brager, Monticello; Stephanie Gaw, Brooklyn Center; Karin McAuley, Coleraine; and Glen Stelling, Minneapolis.
“Every Arbor Day, tens of thousands of Minnesotans enjoy getting a free seedling from their local McDonald’s, so again this year, we teamed up with MFI to expand that fun with some larger trees,” said Paul Ostergaard, McDonald’s co-op president. “It’s great that so many Minnesotans want to add to the state’s beauty by planting trees.”
Wayne Brandt, MFI executive vice president, said those five tall trees won’t be alone.
“Minnesota is known for having bountiful forests that provide beauty, recreational opportunities and a variety of products we use every day,” said Brandt. “Today, Minnesota has 20 million more large trees than it had 50 years ago. Because trees absorb carbon and forest products store carbon, these winners are doing their part in fighting global climate change. We’re pleased to work closely with McDonald’s to help add trees to Minnesota.”

HOWARD LAKE, MN – About 15 people came to meet author Barbara Sommer Wednesday evening and hear about her book.
Sommer was invited by the library to present her recent award-winning book, titled “Hard Work and a Good Deal,” at the Howard Lake Community Room.
The Minnesota Book Awards took place April 26, which is when Sommer was thrilled to learn that she had been declared a winner in the Minnesota category for her book published by the Minnesota Historical Society Press, which recounts the history of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in Minnesota.
The slide show Sommer presented consisted of numerous pictures of all aspects of the CCC as it relates to Minnesota in her book.
Minnesota had 61 CCC camps. The closest camp to Howard Lake was in Maple Lake, Sommer said, where the crew worked on soil conservation efforts.

HOWARD LAKE, MN – Quick thinking, coupled with skills and the right equipment on hand, is what helped the Howard Lake Ambulance team save the life of Don Drusch in April.
Howard Lake Ambulance responded to a 911 call at Drusch’s residence, and found him suffering from cardiac arrest.
Drusch if the father of Howard Lake Fire Chief Joe Drusch.
“We started CPR immediately upon arrival,” said Jeff Granrud, assistant ambulance director for Howard Lake Ambulance. “During CPR, we got him (Drusch) into a readable heart rhythm to utilize the AED (automated external defibrillator).”
Granrud explained that the AED will not shock some types of heart rhythms, so getting a patient into a rhythm that can be read by the AED is critical.
“Everything fell into place,” Drusch said. “I didn’t do anything, except tip over. They (the Howard Lake Ambulance) did everything right – everything clicked.”
More information about this topic will be in Monday’s Herald Journal.
