carWRIGHT COUNTY, MN – Carol Hayner of Waverly was shocked as she sat in her seat during the Wright County Fair’s Fairest of the Fair coronation and heard her name announced as the recipient of the Aquatennial Commodore Award Aug. 16.
As the announcer was describing the person who was to receive the award, some key descriptions clued her in that she was to be the recipient.
About three weeks before the fair, Hayner was asked to embroider umbrellas for local royalty. Hayner owns C & C Embroidery, and when the announcer said, “She can even embroider umbrellas,” she looked around at her friends in disbelief.
“I wasn’t even dressed up. I had my fair clothes on and my baseball cap,” Hayner laughed.
Hayner was chosen for all the embroidery work she does for the fair.
“I just do the work and make sure they (fair board members) look nice,” Hayner said.
“I was just shocked,” she added. “There are so many people who are deserving of that award.”

WRIGHT COUNTY, MN – The third annual Combine Demolition Derby was a smashing hit once again this year during the Wright County Fair Wednesday.
The grandstand area was sold out as sleepy combines, taken out of retirement, were given another chance at action under the sun, many with new and improved paint jobs.
The championship heat consisted of Leighton Bender of Howard Lake (MnDOT), Dale Pokornowski (Full of Bull), Ryan Halverson of Montrose (Bubble Bulldozer), Jake Decker of Waverly (Bull Power), Ted Painschab of Howard Lake (Mad Goose), and Alisha Painschab of Cokato (Wonder Woman); with Decker taking first place, Ted Painschab in second, and Pokornowski taking third place.
The best decorated combines were judged, and first place went to Dale Bauman of Montrose, whose combine was decorated as a shark and named Shark Attack. Second place went to Moeller for his sheriff-painted combine, and third to Bender for his tribute to MnDOT.
Swather soccer took place after the three regular heats, and consisted of two teams of three participants who were Kris Roessler, Pat Bakeberg, Jim (Winnie) Weninger, Eric Swatzke, Matt Lindberg, and Jake Linder.
