Randolph no match for LP/HT

RANDOLPH – In their final non-conference test of the regular season, the Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity Bulldogs’ football team traveled to Randolph Friday, and passed with flying colors.
After falling behind 7-0 to the Rockets, LP/HT scored the final 34 points of the game to come away with a relative easy 34-7 win.

Lakers ground the Rockets

HOWARD LAKE – Several huge individual nights helped the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted Lakers’ football team squeak out a 28-20 win over the Rockford Rockets Friday.
“The Lakers had to battle hard for this win, but fought until the very last play,” head coach George Montgomery said.

LP/HT too tough for Concordia

LESTER PRAIRIE – It wasn’t always pretty Friday night, but in the end it worked for the Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity Bulldogs’ football team.
LP/HT hosted Concordia Academy/Bloomington, beating the winless Lancers 39-22 in front of a nice home crowd.
The win improves the Bulldogs overall record to 3-1, while staying unbeaten in Minnesota Christian Athletic Association play at 3-0.

Lakers fall to highly-ranked Eden Valley-Watkins 35-0

EDEN VALLEY – The stars appear to have been aligned against the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted Lakers’ football team Friday at Eden Valley-Watkins.
Playing the state’s third-ranked Class 2A team on their home field Friday was just the start of what turned out to be a tough night – a 35-0 defeat.

HLWW pulls past LP/HT in volleyball

HOWARD LAKE – The Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted Lakers’ volleyball team hosted the Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity Bulldogs Monday night.
The Lakers came away with a hard fought four game win over LP/HT – 25-22, 25-13, 22-25, 25-19.

Laker volleyball drops a pair

The Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted Lakers’ volleyball team dropped a pair of matches this past week at home.
The Lakers fell to Annandale in three games Sept. 8, then were topped by Holdingford in four games Thursday.
HLWW headed into the Delano Invite Saturday with a 0-2 Central Minnesota Conference record, and were 4-5 overall.
Look for complete details of the Lakers’ loss to Holdingford Thursday, and how they did Saturday in next week’s Herald Journal.
This week, the Lakers will host Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity tonight (Monday), then travels to Eden Valley-Watkins Thursday, Sept. 18.

Annandale 3, HLWW 0
Hosting Annandale Sept. 8, the Lakers fell in straight games 3-0.
The opening game of the night was a quick one, as Annandale ran away with a 25-18 win.
In game two, the Lakers fired back, playing the Cardinals near even the entire game, and coming with-in one point several times.
However, in the end it was Annandale that came away with a 25-23 win. “I really thought we had that game,” head coach Christin LaMott said.
The Cardinals then finished off HLWW with a 25-18 game three win.

Wildcat golf tournament is Oct. 4 – Sports Shorts

The Winsted Wildcats will be hosting their first ever golf tournament Saturday, Oct. 4 at Cokato Golf Course.
The tournament begins at 10 a.m., and will be in a four-person best ball format.
The cost is $45 per person, including cart.

Hutchinson eyes move to Wright County
Hutchinson High School is looking at moving to the Wright County Conference for all sports, becoming the 10th member starting in 2010.
The talks are ongoing. Look for additional information when it becomes available.

The Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity football team sold softener salt this fall to raise money for the football team. Below were the leading sellers:

HLWW traveling basketball sign ups
The deadline to sign up for Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted 5th through 8th grade girls and boys traveling basketball is Friday, Oct. 3.
There are forms available at the HLWW Middle School office, and the HLWW Community Education office, or call Belinda Larson at (320) 286-6665.
Bus trip to Gopher football game Oct. 4
Herald Journal Publishing is offering a nice package for anyone interested in attending the University of Minnesota Gopher’s football game Saturday, Oct. 4 against Indiana. Game time is yet to be announced.
For just $50, you get a ticket to the game, a bus ride to the game, beverages on the bus, and tailgating. The cost is $25 if you have a ticket.
The bus will leave three hours prior to game time from the Ranch House in New Germany.

LP graduate playing college football
Spenser Stender of Lester Prairie plays for the football team at Central Lakes College in Brainerd.
Stender (6-2, 250) is a freshman outside linebacker.
In 2007 the Raiders of the Minnesota College Athletic Conference were 7-4 under first-year head coach Greg Medeck.
On Sept. 27 CLC hosts defending state champion Rochester at 1:30 p.m. at Findorff Field on the Brainerd campus.
CLC is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association, non-scholarship Division III.
1998 LP FB state team to be honored Oct. 3
“At this time I would like to invite all of the 1998 state football tournament team (10-year reunion) to come out and be recognized before the Homecoming game Friday, Oct. 3 in Lester Prairie,” Scoblic said. “Tell the people at the gate you are there for the reunion and you’ll get in for free.”
Five named for induction to MBCA Hall of Fame
The Minnesota Basketball Coaches Association has named five men who will be inducted into the MBCA Hall of Fame this October.
The purpose of the MBCA Hall of Fame is to give special recognition to the people of Minnesota who have made significant contributions to promote high school basketball in the state via their accomplishments and service.
The 2008 inductees are Al Bauman of Little Falls, Tom Ihnot of St. Thomas Academy/Cannon Falls, Loren Marschel, of Okabena, Bob Nelson of Pine River-Backus, and Tom Vix of Rushford-Peterson.
The induction ceremonies will be held at the MBCA Hall of Fame Banquet Sunday, October 26th, noon, at the DoubleTree Park Place Hotel in St. Louis Park.
• Al Bauman was the head basketball coach at Little Falls from 1971-1986.
Prior to becoming the leader of the Flyers, Bauman coached in North Dakota for 10 years leading Washburn to a 64-5 record and Bottineau to a state tournament appearance.
He led Little Falls to three consecutive state tournament appearances in 1975, 1976, and 1977.
The Flyers captured the overall State title in 1975 and earned third place honors in ’76 and ’77.
In addition to the Section championships and state tournament appearances, Flyer teams won five conference titles with Coach Bauman at the helm.
Al compiled an overall record of 371-174 in his 26 years as a head coach including a 215-130 mark at Little Falls.
Coach Bauman was an active member of the MSHSCA and MBCA; serving as MBCA President in 1983 and being a member of the Basketball Advisory Committee.
He helped organize and coached in the Minnesota-Iowa All Star Series.
In addition to his basketball coaching duties, Al served as an assistant football coach and after his retirement from the head basketball coaching position served as an assistant for ten years.
Coach Bauman retired from teaching and coaching in 1997.
• Tom Ihnot’s first head coaching assignment was at Cannon Falls from 1974-1976.
He moved to St. Thomas Academy in 1976 where he coached until 1989 compiling a record of 204-111.
His 1984-85 and 1987-88 Cadets earned Region 3 AA championships and state tournament appearances with the ’84-’85 squad winning the consolation championship.
Tom moved to Burnsville in 1989 and while there led the Blaze to the school’s first Lake Red Conference championship.
Coach Ihnot has also served as a head girls coach at Visitation and Simley and as an assistant at St. Thomas Academy during his 37 years as a basketball coach.
During his 19 years as a head boys coach, Ihnot compiled a record of 277-174. His overall record as a head coach is 362-215.
Tom was named Region 3AA Coach of the Year in 1985 and 1988. He coached the Metro All Stars in the 1986 All Star games.
In addition to his coaching prowess, Coach Ihnot has served the sport and coaching community in several venues.
He is a past president of the MBCA (1984), founded and supervised selection of the MBA Academic All state team, and served as a member of the MSHSL Basketball Advisory Committee. Coach Ihnot is also one of the developers of the “Read Naturally” reading program.
• Loren Marschel was the head boys basketball coach at Okabena, Heron Lake-Okabena and Heron Lake-Okabena-Lakefield high schools for 25 years.
Coach Marschel’s coaching career began in Okabena in 1965 as the head football coach prior to his assuming the head basketball coaching position.
During his tenure as the head coach of the Blue Hawks, Scarlet Knights, and Silver Bullets, Coach Marschel guided teams to three conference titles, two district 7 titles, and Region runner-up finishes in 1977 and 1985. His overall record as a head coach was 299-212.
Loren also led two of his football teams to undefeated seasons and served as an Athletic Director for twenty years.
He also coached baseball for 24 years, 14 as head coach. Loren is a lifetime member of the MSHCA and the MBCA.
Coach Marschel retired from teaching and coaching in 1998.
• Bob Nelson was the head coach at Backus from 1977-1990 and became the head coach at Pine River-Backus when the two communities consolidated in 1990.
He coached at Pine River-Backus until 2003.
Nelson-led squads captured twenty conference titles and a Section 7AA title with a state tournament appearance in 2001.
During his 26 years of coaching boys basketball, he amassed a record of 390-206.
Coach Nelson was selected as conference Coach of the Year four times and was recognized as Section 7AA Coach of the Year in 2005. Bob served as a coach in the 2003 MBCA All Star Series.
In 2004, Coach Nelson accepted the position of girls basketball coach at Pequot Lakes and led the Patriots to a State runner-up finish in 2005.
He is a lifetime member of the MSHSCA and the MBCA.
• Tom Vix has served as the head boys basketball coach at Rushford-Peterson for the past 25 years (1984-2008).
During his tenure at Rushford-Peterson, Coach Vix has guided Trojan teams to nine conference titles, fifteen sub-Section titles, seven Section titles and Class A State championships in 1989 and 2006.
Coach Vix’s other State Tournament teams earned a second place finish in ’05, third place finishes in ’98 and ’00, and fourth place in ’99.
Tom is a member of the 400 win club with an overall record of 465-174 entering the 2008-09 season.
His coaching honors include Class A State Coach of the Year in 1998 and recognition as Section Coach of the Year five times.
Tom coached in the MBCA All Star Series in 2000. He is a life member of the MSHSCA and the MBCA.
Coach Vix has served as a member of the MBCA Executive Board, the MSHSL Basketball Advisory Committee, and MBCA President in 2007-08.
Coach Vix has also coached volleyball, football, and baseball during his career.
Tom is taking a leave of absence from his coaching position for the 2008-2009 school year.
KIPS gymnastics fall season sign ups
Kip gymnastics classes for the fall will be starting soon. Classes will take place in the new Watertown-Mayer High School gym.
• Girls gymnastics classes: 5-week session; classes begin the week of Sept. 23; kindergarten through sixth grade.
• Classes offered: Rollers (beginners) and advanced rollers (advanced beginners) Tuesdays 3:20 to 4:20 p.m. and/or 4:20 to 5:20 p.m. and/or Thursdays 3:20 to 4:20 p.m.
Advanced rollers, Springer’s (intermediate), Aerials, and Flippers (advanced: Wednesdays 3:20 to 5:20 p.m. and/or Fridays 3:20 to 5:20 p.m. (Students must pass the roller level to enter these classes).
• Night classes will be offered for Springer’s, Aerials, and Flippers: Tuesdays 7 to 8:30 p.m. and/or Thursdays 7 to 8:30 p.m.
• Boy’s gymnastics classes: kindergarten through sixth grade; beginner to advanced; four Fridays 5:20 to 6:20 p.m. (Sept. 26, Oct. 3, 10, 24).
• Preschool class for four and five year olds (pre-kindergarten): four Tuesdays; 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. (Sept. 30, Oct. 7, 14, 21).
