Wrestling preview

Okay, the match ups are set for the individual state wrestling tournament.

At 189 pounds, Tony Larson will take on Milaca/Faith Christian’s Roy Ash in the first round. Ash has a 38-4 record and is ranked fifth by The Guillotine. That should not be discouraging to Larson, though, because he defeated the fourth-ranked wrestler (Kurt Schlangen) to earn the Section 6AA title. Tony is in the bottom part of the bracket, which features last year’s runner-up, Drew Ross from Fergus Falls, who is a perfect 35-0. The two would face off in the semifinals if it plays out that far. By the way, Larson has a 30-8 record.

At heavyweight, Chuck Pokornowski will wrestle Casey Johnson from Kasson-Mantorville. Johnson has a 33-7 record and is unranked. Pokornowski is in the top half of the heavyweight bracket, which features two of the three returning medalists from last year. They are Carter Ash (42-0) and Cody Socher (37-4 and from Delano). If Chuck can win his first two match ups, he would most likely face one of them.

Dragons vs. Windom

Windom defeated 0-15 Sleepy Eye 14-1 (that’s not a typo) Tuesday, setting up Thursday’s matchup between the Eagles and the Dragons.

The two teams did not face each other in the regular season. The Dragons finished the season 9-14-2, Windom had a winning record at 13-11-1. The two teams had three common opponents: New Ulm, Marshall, and Le Seuer-Henderson/St. Peter. L/DC was 2-1-1 against those teams, Windom was 1-2-1.

L/DC defeated St. Peter twice, tied Marshall in that 6-6 game, and lost to New Ulm. Windom also defeated St. Peter, lost to New Ulm, and tied and lost to Marshall. Minnesotascores.net’s QRF has the Dragons ranked third-highest in the section at 43, Windom is at 64.

Remember, the game is Thursday night at 7 p.m. in Litchfield.

What should I blog about?

Hello all my readers. How many of you are there? Well, I’m not sure, but by the few responses I’ve been getting, I’m guessing not too many. With that said, I would like to ask this question to everyone that either reads this blog on a regular basis, or even if you just happen to stumble across it. My question is this – what would you like me to blog about? Please, keep it clean and sports related, and I’ll blog on every topic that gets put here.

Quick Daytona impressions

Ok, after a brief break, NASCAR is back in action. After witnessing the shootout and qualifying, I have mixed impressions.

First, Toyota may have figured it out. If you remember last season, Toyota teams like Michael Waltrip put all their stock into trying to get into Daytona, and most failed miserably. This season, three Toyotas made the top six in qualifying, with Waltrip starting on the outside pole. The resources that Joe Gibbs racing brought over and the money Toyota typically sinks into racing must have helped.

Second, it appears that Hendrick will dominate the sport again, which is not a good thing, by the way. Under the “I saw that coming” category, Dale Jr. won the shootout last weekend, and he will win at least five races this season. Look for him to have an outstanding season. Speaking of Hendrick, our favorite repeat winner is on the pole for the Super Bowl of racing. Jimmy Johnson has picked up right where he left off from last year. The question is, led by Johnson, will Hendrick dominate most races like they did last season. Nothing against them, but I hope not.

Thoughts on the Santana trade

I wasn’t all that happy with the Twins’ trade of Johan Santana to the New York Mets. Yes, I knew he was going to be traded, and I have come to accept that. However, if the four players they got were all they were going to get, I would have rather had them keep him for this season, and roll the dice. What are some of your thoughts?

Boxscores

Here are boxscores from boys’ and girls’ basketball and girls’ hockey that did not get into the Feb. 4 ED due to space restraints.

NFL Hall of Fame voters are blind

I have a Viking bias when it comes to the NFL Hall of Fame voting. I’m glad to see Gary Zimmerman got voted in, but how does he get in and Randall McDaniel not? They were both pro bowlers, but nobody at any position has played in more pro bowls than McDaniel. Not Jerry Rice, not Joe Montana and certainly not Gary Zimmerman. The only difference between Zimmerman and McDaniel is that Zimmerman has a Super Bowl ring. Played on a Super Bowl winning team does not make Zimmerman better than McDaniel. I’m not saying Zimmerman should not have been voted in, I’m saying they both should have been. On the same topic, what about Chris Carter. Besides Rice, Cartner was probably the best receivers in the 1990s.

Best local clutch performance

With HLWW’s Keith Diers knocking down two game-winning 3-pointers for the Lakers boys’ basketball team in back-to-back games, it got me thinking. What are some of the best, local clutch performances from the past? One of recent memory was when Joe Kley hit an 8th inning home run to tie the game up against Young America for the Winsted Wildcats in the Region 7C tournament last year. Any you can think of, please post.
