ROCKFORD – Tuesday was an exciting night for the Dassel-Cokato gymnastics team when it loaded up the bus and to Rockford for a non-conference meet.
The Chargers continue to try more difficult skills, and that determination paid off big as DC snagged its first win over the Rockets with a final of 114.9 to 107.35. DC had better team scores than the Rockets in every event.
This was the Chargers’ (1-2, 0-2 WCC) best overall score of the season. In order for the team to improve, though, DC individuals have also improved as the season goes on.
The Chargers had three all-around gymnasts, and all of them had their best nights of the season. DC senior captain took first with a score of 30.95, Ashlyn Davis was second with 28.4, and Lydia Erickson was close behind with 28.2 for third.
DC’s biggest improvements came in the vault and floor exercise where every Charger either set a new season high for themselves, or tied an old one.
In the vault, Megan Nyquist led all gymnasts with a personal season best of 8.7. Chargers Ashlyn Davis (7.65), Lydia Erickson (7.65), and Brianna Lindgren (7.55) also scored season bests, and Alyssa Walter (7.6) tied her best, to help the Chargers take the event.
Nyquist also led all gymnasts in the floor exercise with a score of 7.85, her best of the season. Walter (6.5), Lindgren (7.15), Davis (7.15), and Erickson (7.1) all set new personal season bests, and the Chargers won the event.
The balance beam was the third event that Nyquist finish first among all gymnasts as she scored a 7.4. Although DC didn’t have anybody score season bests in this event, The Chargers did sweep four of the top five places to easily defeat the Rockets by nearly five points as a team.
The uneven bars was the only event Rockford had the top individual as Brianna Schumacher took first with a 7.25 score. Davis was the top Charger with a 7.1 her best score in the event this season. Lindgren also set a new season best for herself in this event with a score of 6.65, and DC still managed to pull out a narrow win in the event.
In the junior varsity meet, the Chargers easily defeated Rockford 88.1 to 31.6.
Kate Tormanen was the leading Charger gymnast as she took first in the vault (7.75), uneven bars (4.1), and balance beam (5.9). She was also the only JV gymnast to qualify for the all-around with a score of 24.75. DC’s Caitlin Latt was the leading gymnast in the floor exercise with a score of 7.4 for first.
