The Dassel-Cokato girls swimming and diving team hosted its annual season banquet recently, and head coach Erin Tormanen used that time to announce the team’s final stats and team award winners.
Winning the Most Valuable award was sophomore Brooke Danielson.
Rookie of the Year went to seventh grader Carli Kirchoff, and the Most Improved Award was given to Brooke Halonen.
Junior Larinda Norgren was given the Spirit Award, the 100% Award went to senior Deborah Rokala, and the Coach’s Award was given to junior Kristen Haider, eighth graders Noel Niemela and Kallie Evans, and Kirchoff.
Several Chargers also earned conference honors.
Senior Mary Ylitalo, Norgren, and sophomore Victoria Tormanen earned Wright County All-Conference honors. Haider and Danielson earned honorable mention.
It was a successful season for the Chargers, in many respects. DC finished the year 3-6 in duel meets, and 3-3 in the WCC meets to finish third in the conference standings.
The Chargers saw two school records broken. Norgren set a new record in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.21, and Tormanen set a new record in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:10.69.
DC sent 19 kids to the Section 3A Tournament this season, including eight for their first time.
At sections, DC sent several girls to the finals where many racked up medals. Individually, Norgren took sixth place in the 50 freestyle, Tormanen took fifth in the 100 breaststroke, and Ylitalo took 12th place in the breaststroke.
All three relay teams also brought in medals. The 200- and 400-yard freestyle relay teams of Haider, Danielson, Norgren and Kelsey Nagel took seventh place in both events. The 200-yard medley relay team of Haider, Danielson, Norgren, and Tormanen also took fifth.
Topping the season of for four DC girls was a trip to the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center for the Class A Girls Swimming and Diving Tournament.
It was the first trip to state for Haider, Danielson, Norgren, and Tormanen, and they all went as part of the state qualifying 200 medley relay team. Tormanen also qualified individualy in the breaststoke. Both the relay team and Tormanen finished 23rd at state.
