Twelve Charger wrestlers remain

After the first day of the Section 6AA individual wrestling tournament at Dassel-Cokato High School, the Chargers still have 12 wrestlers returning for the second day of matches. The first two rounds of the championship bracket, plus one round of wrestlebacks, were completed. Nine DC wrestlers are undefeated, including: seniors Max Anderson (112 pounds), Brandon Fiedler (119), Zach Peterson (130), Dan Wanha (145) and Sam Pokornowski (285), and juniors Kyle Johnson (125), Tyler Dobmeier (140), Tyler Irvin (189) and Dakota Hanson (215). Three Chargers won their first round matches, but lost in the quarterfinals and will try to make their way through the wrestleback round. They are seniors Tyler Nelson (160) and Grant Petersen (171), and freshman Andrew Madson (152). Two of DC’s other young varsity wrestlers, eighth grader Brady Peterson (103) and freshman Brett Abrahamson (135), lost their first two matches and exited the tournament.

The Chargers suffered a bruising 72-44 loss Friday night at Dassel-Cokato High School to Wright County Conference rival Delano.
Nothing was working for the Charger offense or defense, plain and simple.
The Chargers (3-17, 2-11 WCC) couldn’t get baskets to fall. They hit just 21 percent from the floor (13 for 60). On the defensive end, DC was brutalized under the baskets. Offensive rebounds killed them, and the Tigers outrebounded the Chargers 37-17 overall in the game.

The Dassel-Cokato wrestling team was in action this week for the Section 6AA Tournament to see if they would be the one out of 11 teams to represent the section at the Class AA state team tournament.
The Chargers’ goal was to make it through to the championship round where they would most likely match-up against Foley, the No. 2 ranked Class AA team in the state. DC, which is ranked No. 9 in the state, didn’t have any easy road to get there, though. The Chargers had to face Big Lake in the quarterfinal round, one of the section’s up-and-coming teams, and then No. 6-ranked New London-Spicer in the semifinals.
The Big Lake Hornets put up a small fight, but DC managed them well claiming a 42-22 victory. For the second consecutive year, though, the Chargers ran into the Wildcats in the semifinals and ended their team season with a 34-30 loss.

After a rough four-game stretch that saw the Dassel-Cokato girls basketball team lose bad games to Wright County Conference opponents, the Chargers finally got back in the win-column with a 76-53 trouncing of the Delano Tigers.
“There spurts tonight where we looked though,” DC head coach Matt Whittaker said in a statement. “I was really proud of their effort to step up and put away a team on the road.”
DC’s offense was as good as it has been all season, shooting 52 percent from the floor (31 of 59). They also hit seven buckets from beyond the three-point arc.

It was time for the biggest meet of their season Friday when the Dassel-Cokato gymnastics team competed at the Section 5A tournament in Delano.
The Chargers had spent the last two weeks mending their bodies and preparing for the climax of the season. For many of DC’s girls, it was their first section meet, but that didn’t stop them from setting lofty goals for themselves.
