HUTCHINSON – The weather may not have been pleasant Wednesday when the Charger boys’ golf team played in the first day of the Section 5AA tournament at Crow River Country Club in Hutchinson, but their results were.
The young Charger squad finished the blustery day, which saw winds of up to 50 mph, and 90 degree heat, with a fifth-place score of 358, and just barely missed the cut to play as a team on the second day.
Orono was in first after Day 1 of the tournament with a 321, Holy Family was second with a 332, Waconia was third with a 346, and Delano just edged out DC with a 353 to be the final team to make the cut.
Leading the way for the Chargers in the section meet was Tyler Koivisto (86), Brice Ryynanen (88), Neil Harmala (89), and Dan Morris (95).
Although the team didn’t quite make the cut, DC head coach Brian Johnson was pleased with the final results.
“I couldn’t be more proud of what they did, especially in the conditions,” he said. “It wasn’t as much of a physical grind as it was a mental grind.”
Although the team didn’t qualify for Day 2 of the tournament, DC’s top three golfers did qualify as individuals.
