After graduating just one senior last year, the Charger girls’ golf team welcomes back a strong group of returning players, which is led not only by its seniors, but a core of skilled underclassman.
Heidi Harmala was the lone senior, and captain, last year, and is the only player DC lost due to graduation.
Another letter-winner from last season not returning is Abby Thomson, who is still recovering from an injury sustained during the basketball season.
While these two varsity golfers will be missed, DC head coach Jon Ring is happy to have several letter-winners returning, including a large group of new, and upcoming golfers.

The field is “wide open” for the varsity boys’ golf team, in the words of its head coach, Brian Johnson.
With no returning seniors on the team, and just one letter-winner back for the 2009 season, there are several varsity spots up for grabs, and Johnson says, as of last week, the playing field is pretty much level.
“Until we can get outside and actually play the courses, get some rounds in, and do some qualifying (we won’t know),” he said. “They just need to get out there and play.”
Last year, the Chargers graduated four seniors – Eric Dahlman, Garrett Ryynanen, Alex Morris, and Joel Ring.
Also not returning is Trevor Grindle, who moved away with his family and would have been a senior this season.
All five of these players were members of the varsity squad last season, and participated in the Section 5AA meet.
There is one returning letter-winner, however, and he led the Chargers individually at the section meet last year.
Sophomore Troy Koivisto returns for his second season, and after placing 27th at the section meet last year, 10 places out of a state berth, with a combined two-day score of 166, there are some high expectations for this young up-and-comer.

The girls’ track and field team has a difficult task ahead of it, filling in the open positions left by some of its top athletes last season, who graduated.
Seniors Dayna Sherman, Lindsey Keskey, Beth Keskey, and Aimee Peterson will be tough shoes to fill.
The loss of those four seniors struck DC in almost every area.
Sherman was the team’s leading scorer last season, and competed in the hurdles, triple jump, and was a part of the 4×400 relay team which set a new school record.
She also set an individual school record in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 47.44.
Lindsey Keskey was also a hurdler, a long jumper, and was part of several relay teams.
Beth Keskey was a pole vaulter, and mid-distance runner, while Peterson specialized in throwing events.
These four seniors won’t be easy to replace, but the new head coach of the DC girls’ track and field team, Drew Gilmore, thinks the Chargers have what it takes.

All four of the DC boys’ track and field captains agree, they have a young team coming into this season.
But, don’t let this lack in age fool you, the Chargers still believe they will be able to compete this season, despite some tough losses from last year.
The Chargers graduated three seniors – Mitch Jorgenson, Phil Uecker, and Dan Thorson.
Of those three losses, Jorgenson’s will be the one felt the most, according to DC head coach Drew Gilmore. Jorgenson was the Wright County Conference high jumping champion last season.
“We are really going to miss him,” Gilmore said. “He was guaranteed to win the high jump in almost every meet we went to.”
Uecker, another graduate, was DC’s top thrower, and a sprinter, while Thorson was another sprinter, and long jumper.
Together, these three graduate will be tough to replace.
But where the old Charger athletes have left, a new crop is coming in, waiting to make their mark, and earn some spots in varsity events.

The Charger softball team returns for the 2009 season with a strong group for experienced varsity players on the team, but even though they have a good core of returners, DC head coach Rachel Franklin says there is still a lot questions, and position, up in the air.
The Chargers graduated four players last season – Lea Abrahamson, Briann Jennissen, Leghana Nyquist, and Breanna Revard.
While the loss of these four girls has left some positions open, especially in the outfield, it will be at the plate where the loss is felt the most.

The Charger baseball team is returning in pretty good shape for the 2009 season, after graduating just five players from its roster last season.
While the five seniors they lost were important pieces of the 12-8 2008 team, DC head coach Jeff Neutzling is confident the returning core of players this year has what it takes to absorb those losses.
“We’ve got a good core coming back,” he said. “If they bring their A-game, we should be able to compete.”
Those graduates not returning this season are Tyler Zweibohmer, Luke Larson, Lucas Peterson, Derrick Johnson, and Mark Koivisto.
