WINSTED, MN – A soldier has been killed in the unit of David “Keith” Dawes, Winsted native, who was profiled last week in the Herald Journal. The soldier killed in action prompted a communication blackout in Helmand Province of Afghanistan, where Dawes has been serving for about a month.

“It has been pretty rough here,” Dawes said. “One of our soldiers was killed in action on the 5th of March.”

A remembrance ceremony was planned for the soldier March 8.

Dawes’ company is responsible for clearing Helmand of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) or roadside bombs.

In just one day in Afghanistan, Dawes’ men found 10 IEDs.
