MN Disaster Relief looking for volunteers to head to Fargo

DASSEL-COKATO, MN - Al Nagel, director of Minnesota Disaster Relief recieved a phone call from a North Dakota sheriff’s department urging for volunteers to help sandbag. The National Weather Service said the Red River was over its banks Sunday in Fargo, at a level of about 21 feet, or about 3 feet above flood stage.

“I need to say, this will not be fun work, it will mean working in the rain, filling and moving sand bags all day,” Nagel wrote in an e-mail requesting for help. “It will mean possibly saving a families home and all their belongings. Another challenge to this request, they need us NOW. Not very much for advanced notice. The forecasters predict the waters will crest on Thursday at 1 p.m. at 40 feet. So, that gives very little time for this work to get done. [The sheriff] told me that they had a 3-mile stretch to bag up to as high as 9 feet. Now to give you a reference point, if you need a wall 9-feet high, on the top you would have one bag, but on the bottom you would need a base 20-feet thick … that is a lot of bags,” Nagel added.

For those interested in helping, contact Nagel at (320) 296-1521. Volunteers will be fed by the Salvation Army.
