Dassel Elementary experienced a gas leak early this morning causing them to bus students to the Covenant church for safety, according to Principal Rob Nudell.
At approximately 7 am (Thursday), a smell of gas was discovered in the custodial area. No students were allowed in the school from that point, Nudell said. A call was made to the gas company and for extra precautionary measures, the building was evacuated. Students were bused to the Covenant Church at about 7:50 am, to keep them warm and safe, according to Nudell.
The gas company arrived at school, discovered a small gas leak in the custodial room, and the leak was promptly fixed. They were instructed that the building was safe to occupy, and students were bused back to school at about 8:45 am. “Students and staff did a great job and all are safe,” Nudell said.

The DC drumline continued its successful season as they took the competition floor in another two-show weekend. Saturday, the team traveled to Elk River where they faced the biggest line-up of the season with 14 lines competing. DC came in second place of the 14, only three-tenths of a point behind last year’s state champion Coon Rapids. Although Coon Rapids placed first overall, DC beat them in two of three categories - music and over all performance. Coon Rapids placed first in the visual category.
On Sunday, DC earned first place at the Buffalo show and, more importantly, took the overall People’s Choice award as the crowd favorite, topping all of the other lines at the show. The People’s Choice award affirms the popularity of D-C’s music and show and, therefore, is more meaningful to the team than any first place trophy they have received.
Next weekend the team heads to Eagan for the WGI - Winter Guard International Show. This show is part of the National Drumline traveling circuit that includes lines from all over the midwest. This will be DC’s first time competing in a show of this magnitude. Complete scores and results are available online at www.mnperc.org.
