Wright Co. talks about weed invasion

bloom-photo-1.jpgThis week, the Wright County Board authorized Ag Inspector Ken Johnson and Kerry Saxton of the Wright County Soil and Water Conservation District to seek a grant to create a cooperative weed management area. The goal would be a cooperative effort to combat invasive species, such as buckthorn and wild parsnip (shown).

Wright Co. says ‘no’ to gravel mining environmental impact study

Residents and commissioners in favor of an Environmental Impact Study (EIS) for a proposed gravel mining expansion in Southside Township failed to convince the majority of the Wright County Board that the study would solve any problems, and the board voted against requiring the study.

An Environmental Assessment Worksheet (EAS) has already been completed for the project.

Weather advisory issued for area

The National Weather Service has issued an urgent advisory starting midnight tonight (Monday night, Jan. 28) through 11 p.m. Tuesday for nearly all the counties in Minnesota, except for the southeastern corner, which is due for a full-blown storm:

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT TONIGHT TO 6 PM CST TUESDAY UNTIL 11:00PM CST
Urgent -… Strong Arctic Cold Front To Bring Strong Winds And Cold Temperatures With The Threat Of Some Snow And Blowing Snow, starting midnight Jan. 28 through 11 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29.

Wind chill advisory issued for area

A wind chill advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service for Wright and Hennepin counties this morning (Saturday, Jan. 19).

The Twin Cities is expecting double digit, subzero temps. Wind chills are expected between -25 and -35 during the day.

Waconia misses deadline; fined $75,000

Waconia School District was one of 16 districts that did not make the Jan. 15 deadline mandated by the state for settling teachers’ contracts, which run in two-year cycles.  Waconia failed to ratify contracts, according to KDUZ radio, causing the state to fine it $75,000.  St. Cloud faces a loss in state aid of $257,000, and Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City  faces a fine of $24,000 to $25,000.

The following is an official statement released today (Jan. 15) by Gov. Tim Pawlenty about the I-35 bridge collapse in relation to information released today by the National Transportation Safety Board:
A STATEMENT FROM THE GOVERNOR:

“Although the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigation has not been completed, today we learned the I-35W Bridge had a serious original design flaw that existed from the time the bridge was built in the 1960s.

Hertzog case continued again

The pre-trial conference of Bert James Hertzog, 53, of Winsted was continued from Jan. 14 to Wednesday, Feb. 13.

Hertzog is charged in Wright County with theft-by-swindle, aggravated forgery, and inspecting vehicles without certification.

Hertzog has entered a plea of not guilty. He is being represented by Attorney Robert Adams of Buffalo.

Hertzog’s charges stem from him allegedly making false inspections of commercial vehicles.

Pilot in non-fatal crash is identified

Marlin Roy Zierman of Mayer, 63, was identified by authorities as the pilot of a single-seat , amateur-built plane that crashed as it was headed from Brainerd to Winsted on Saturday afternoon. The plane went down on the ice of Round Lake north of Garrison. Aitkin County Sheriff Scott Turner says Zierman was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. Witnesses told investigators it sounded like the plane was having engine trouble and that the pilot appeared to be attempting an emergency landing.
