HLWW student killed in car accident Wednesday near Annandale

UPDATED SUNDAY AT 9:30 P.M.

A severe car accident took place Wednesday – just days before graduation for HLWW – with four Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted seniors involved, as they returned from the section track meet on Highway 55 near Annandale.

Killed was HLWW senior Madey Kleve, 18 who was one of three candidates for Miss Howard Lake this year.

Among the injured are senior Kacie Carlsted, 18, who is a prolific dancer and also a candidate for Miss Howard Lake, who has a broken pelvis, punctured lung and facial injuries; senior Mitch Bayerl, 18, who was airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center, and Brie Barfknecht of Waverly, who was taken to Buffalo Hospital, treated and released. Temporary stop signs to be removed from Hwy. 7

The temporary stop signs on Highway 7 at the intersections with McLeod County Road 1, McLeod County Road 9, and Carver County Road 33 will soon be removed, according to MnDOT representative Kelly Brunkhorst. She said new signs will be placed on these crossroads indicating that traffic on Highway 7 does not stop. The intersection of Highway 7 and Highway 25 in Carver County will remain a four-way stop for now, Brunkhorst said. Crews will be working on the Highway 7 project Saturday, May 31.

Band Silent Substitute in concert to support Guatemalan mission

The Christian rock band Silent Substitute is on a mission “near and dear to their hearts” – helping young children in need.
Performing at a concert Friday, June 6 at 7 p.m. at Howard Lake Waverly-Winsted Middle School, Silent Substitute offers its talent to assist in the funding of the upcoming Harvest Community Church of Winsted’s Guatemalan mission trip in August.
In Guatemala, the Harvest Community Church supports Michael and Kambria Robertson, missionaries with Open Doors Ministry International. The Robertsons work primarily with orphans and medical ministry near Guatemala City. A major project Robertsons are working on is called House of Hope which will offer one meal a day to the children who don’t always get enough to eat.

Wright County recognizes Michael Minnick on his retirment

Wright County Surveyor Steve Jobe, on behalf of the county, presented a retirement plaque to Senior Survey Technician Michael Minnick who is retiring this week after more than 33 years of service to Wright County. Jobe described Minnick as “the backbone of the survey department.”

Heroin lands New Germany man in jail

A routine traffic stop in Lester Prairie early Tuesday morning led to a trip to the McLeod County jail for Lance Allen Beckman, 19, of New Germany. Beckman was charged with several offenses including felony possession of heroin, according to a formal complaint.
At approximately 12:30 a.m., Lester Prairie Police Officer Brenda Conzet stopped Beckman for speeding, and for no vehicle registration.
Beckman was only able to provide a photo copy of his driver’s license, and told Conzet that he had sent his license to the social security office to obtain a new card. His social security card was located in his wallet during the investigation, according to the complaint.

LP School Board approves new superintendent

The Lester Prairie School Board approved hiring Breckenridge superintendent Greg East on a three-year contract at a starting salary of $85,000 Tuesday night. East will take over as superintendent Tuesday, July 1, and outgoing superintendent Joe Miller, who is retiring, will stay on in an advisory capacity until his contract is up in August.

Winsted, Tree City USA, celebrates Arbor Day

winfinishweb.jpgThe City of Winsted observed Arbor Day by planting an Autumn Blaze Maple tree in Westgate Park Tuesday afternoon. Mayor Steve Stotko, Winsted tree member Hank Poshek; city council members Dave Mochinski, Bonnie Quast, and Tom Wiemiller; Police Chief Mike Henrich, Officer Justin Heldt; city maintenance staff Dave Meyer and Jamie Stotko; and people from around the area were all willing to lend a hand with the planting. After the planting, a proclamation at Winsted City Hall was given by Mayor Steve Stotko on the value of planting and maintaining trees in the community.

New mayor, council member take over in LP

Last night’s Lester Prairie city council meeting seemed a bit like a game of musical chairs. Mayor Eric Angvall, who announced his intention to resign in March, stepped down at the end of the meeting. Council Member Larry Hoof entertained motions accepting the resignation and announcing the vacancy. Then Hoof acknowleged that as acting mayor, he would normally be the person to fill out the remainder of the term of mayor which expires in January 2009, but respectfully asked the council to appoint Council Member Andy Heimerl as mayor instead. Heimerl was appointed, and entertained a motion to appoint resident Bob Messer to fill the council seat he, Heimerl, had just vacated, through January. Hoof administered the oath of office to Heimerl, and Heimerl administered the oath of office to Messer.

LP, McLeod County discuss road changes

Roundabouts are off the table, but the Lester Prairie City Council and representatives from the McLeod County Highway Department discussed other options for changes to the intersection of McLeod County Road 9 and County Road 23 during a special meeting Monday. The construction will not begin until 2010, but the county is getting input from the city during the preliminary planning stages to be sure the design will meet the city’s needs. The county will meet with the city again this fall, and final plan should be approved early next year, according to County Engineer John Brunkhorst.

Victor Township house fire under investigation

The Howard Lake Fire Department, with mutual aid from Winsted Fire Department supplying full equipment and Cokato Fire Department bringing water, responded to a house fire in Victor Township Monday evening on 110th Street, according to Howard Lake Fire Chief Joe Drusch.

No one was in the home, owned by Craig Kieser, at the time of the fire.  The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time and is under investigation, according to Drusch.
