A Mayer couple were arrested recently following a search Carver County Sheriff’s Office where drugs and a short-barreled shotgun were recovered.
Arrested were Michael Leroy Spiering and Jennifer Ann Spiering of Mayer on felony drug charges and possession of a short-barreled shotgun. The investigation was conducted by agents of the Southwest Metro Drug Task Force including deputies with the Carver County Sheriff’s Office. Longtime McLeod County administrator Nan Crary was terminated by the McLeod County Board of Commissioners Tuesday night on a 3-2 split vote, reported McLeod County Auditor Cindy Schultz.

A free concert at Holy Trinity School Wednesday, April 30, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. with the Christian alternative rock band Lightswitch performing. The band features four brothers who have brought a positive message to thousands of young people through their music. The concert is to kick off this year’s Higher Ground Music Festival set for Friday, Aug. 15, and Saturday, Aug. 16. There will be door prizes and concessions available. Discounted Higher Ground tickets will be sold, as well. Everyone is welcome!
The cause of a house fire in Howard Lake March 16 has been ruled an arson by the Wright County Arson Investigation Team, the State Fire Marshall’s Office, and the Howard Lake Police Department, according to a press release from the Howard Lake Police Department.
The house, owned by Kimberly and Wayne Birkholz according to Wright County property records, was unoccupied at the time of the fire, and is currently for sale. The fire was extinguished by the Howard Lake Fire Department, according to the report.
“The State Fire Marshall’s Office has, at this time, offered a reward of $2,500 for information leading to the arrest of the person(s) responsible for the fire,†said Howard Lake Police Chief Dan Lang.
Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call the Howard Lake Police Department at (320) 543-3670. Information will be kept confidential, Lang said.
The Mcleod County Board approved moving forward with jail improvements that could cost $1.5-million, according to the McLeod County Chronicle. The Chronicle reported that’s how much it could cost to bring the Mcleod County Jail into compliance with Minnesota Department of Corrections regulations and guidelines. Officials say the upgrades will be paid for out of money that the county levied for the new jail project that was abandoned last fall.
Winsted City Council got some unexpected good news at its Tuesday meeting; news that will save the city money and provide more flexibility. Governor Tim Pawlenty recently signed special legislation for the City of Winsted giving the city bonding authority to fund the city center project. The city has been waiting for the legislation to be passed since it first began working out fundig for its new city hall. The council has accepted the legislation and will use the bond issue to cover a portion of the new city hall funding taken from its general fund and park reserve budget.
Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted district residents may attend tonight’s informational meeting about the upcoming mail-in ballot asking to renew an expired operating levy. The meeting is this evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the new high school commons.
