CARVER COUNTY, MN – Need a pair of good tennis shoes, a high-quality saddle, a set of ATV tires, or a flat-screen TV? By the spring of 2012, shoppers will be able to explore the many useful products at the new Mills Fleet Farm in Carver.
“I think their store motto is ‘If you can’t get it at Mills Fleet Farm, you don’t need it,’” Carver City Administrator Brent Mareck said.
Construction for the store is expected to start July 2011, northwest of Highway 212 and Jonathon Carver Parkway.
Mills Fleet Farm has 31 other stores throughout the Midwest, including 11 in Minnesota.
“The store in Carver will be modeled a lot after the Rochester store,” Mareck said. In addition to the primary store, it will include a Mills Gas Mart convenience store and Mills Car Wash.
According to engineer Bruce Buxton of Widseth Smith Nolting, Mills Fleet Farm has been planning a store in the southwest metro area for the past 10 to 15 years.
“They have owned property in Carver for three to four years,” said Buxton, who has been involved in Mills Fleet Farm work for 30 years.
The final decision to build it in Carver came after the Highway 212 upgrade, because of its easy access for shoppers. The city will also be constructing an additional road to access the property, Mareck added.
“Hopefully, this store will be the first of many more commercial retail sites in Carver,” he said, adding that the property adjacent to the Mills Fleet Farm location is also a potential retail site.
“This opens new doors for retail opportunities,” Mareck said. “There will be shoppers not only from the City of Carver, but regionally, as well.”
Buxton said he expects the Carver Mills Fleet Farm to hire between 150 and 200 people, including temporary and permanent workers.
“This will help spur more retail and industry, and create jobs,” Mareck said. “It’s kind of a home run.”
Mills Fleet Farm began in 1955, with its primary focus on serving farmers. Since then, it has expanded its product line to offer a broader appeal. To learn more about Mills Fleet Farm, go to www.fleetfarm.com.
