St. Marks, St. James, Zion and all the other Lutheran schools in the area have been celebrating Lutheran Schools Week this week. Our Lutheran school in my hometown is no exception. Students were expected to make placemats for a chili luncheon Sunday. The placemats were supposed to have the theme showing why the students loved their Lutheran school. Most showed pictures of things at school they liked, such as the teachers, the students’ friends, and their favorite activities, all liberally decorated with hearts and the ubiquitous “three crosses on a hill” that Lutheran kids like to draw. Some of the really little kids drew pictures that are unrecognizable. One of the students must have known the adults were preparing chili for the luncheon. She drew a bowl with a sign above it that said “Lutheran chili – It’s good.” The chili dinner organizers got such a kick out of it, they didn’t want to use it as a one-use placemat. They put the placemat up as a sign where the line formed to buy tickets for the chili dinner.
