Larks edged by Orphans in first game after 4th holiday

LORETTO — After a lengthy break over the 4th of July week, Loretto got back to work Sunday, July 7, when it hosted Howard Lake at Arnold Klaers Field.

The host Larks had a win in their sights until the Orphans posted two runs in the top of the eighth inning.

Those two runs gave Howard Lake a 3-2 win.

Jared Koch’s double scored Steve Boger with one out in the top of the eighth inning to tie the game 2-2. A two-out error by the Larks on Matt Donovan’s ground-ball to second base allowed Koch to score the go-ahead run.

In its final two at-bats, Loretto put the tying run on second base and the winning run on first with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Howard Lake reliever Zach Kuefler wiggled out of the jam with a strikeout and a line drive out to end the game.

Loretto led 2-0 after four innings.

Tyler Gearin’s sacrifice fly scored Bradley Koskie in the bottom of the second inning to put the Larks up 1-0. With two outs in the fourth inning, Kent Koch doubled home William Reschenberg to make it 2-0.

Howard Lake cut the deficit in half, to 2-1, in the top of the fifth inning, when Alex Baumann doubled home Koch.

Jared Koch had three hits for Howard Lake.

Kent Koch had three hits for Loretto.

Danny Schroeder pitched all nine innings for the Larks in the loss.

Schroeder’s pitching line was two earned runs on nine hits and two walks. He struck out one.

Mike Dockendorf picked up the win for Howard Lake after striking out six in seven innings. He gave up two earned runs on nine hits and three walks.

Kueffler picked up the save in two innings of relief.
