Minnesota Disaster Relief of Cokato is taking two trips (March 6 and 21) to Mississippi to help out with people still in need from Hurricane Katrina. If you have any items that would be useful, and would like to donate, please contact Brad Curtis at (320) 237-6815 and they can arrange either a pickup of these items or a drop off. In the past, these trips have attracted people from the local area and in general receive an outpouring of regional support.
Items needed include, but are not limited to: recreation equipment, appliances, electronics, games, books, furniture, kitchen ware, household items, dishes, and bedroom items. Please search your home and see what you have to donate for these people still in need. Click here for a past article about this worthy organization.

I am wondering why this organization doesn’t provide more time, effort and monetary resources to our friends and neighbors in the Meeker County area. There are so many folks hurting and suffering right now with job losses, foreclosures, hunger, etc. that need help, too. Perhaps looking next door to our friends might be a better use of resources rather than traipsing across the country to Mississippi. I understand that the Katrina victims need assistance, too, but wouldn’t it be a better use of time and money to help the local folks instead? Perhaps assisting a family move from their foreclosued home will reinforce their faith in God even if you can’t provide a home; perhaps just being there to assist with the little things would be appreciated. A shoulder to cry on helps alot. I know the need is great down in Mississippi, but many times we need to just look next door or in our back yards to find someone in need.
