Kernels split nailbiters


The Cokato Kernels split two 6-5 nailbiters in recent action, hanging on to defeat Maple Plain 6-5 at home Friday, before falling 6-5 to Loretto in a late-inning heartbreaker on the road Saturday.

Against Maple Plain, Isaac Nelson hit a fifth-inning grand slam, and Steve Schmitt pitched out trouble in the ninth, to give the Kernels a 6-5 win over Maple Plain at home Friday.

Against Loretto, the Kernels trailed 4-1 heading into the top of the ninth. Cokato rallied for four runs to take a 5-4 lead, only to see Loretto (12-5 NSL) score two in the bottom of the ninth to score a walkoff victory.

The Kernels are now 6-15 overall, 6-11 in NSL play. They will play in the four-team NSL “piggyback” bracket to determine the final playoff spot starting Wednesday, July 25.
