Minnesota Statutes 2004, section 121A.17, subdivision 1 states that every school board must provide for a mandatory program of early childhood developmental screening for children at least once before school entrance, targeting children who are between three and four years old.

This screening is a mandatory requirement for a student who will be attending a public school, and it is free. The children also have a fun time doing it. Early childhood screening is a wonderful way for children to have possible health or learning concerns identified early and get help before starting school. During the early childhood screening, which takes about an hour, well-qualified staff will check your child’s vision, hearing, growth, immunization status, and assess thinking, communication and language, large and small muscles and social/emotional development.
All of this information is important for your child’s continued learning and readiness for future school success.

After the screening, you will be given a full report of your child’s learning and growth, parenting tips and developmental information.  Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted School District has scheduled an early childhood screening for those children whose birthday is between December 1, 2004 through June 30,  2005, Friday, Dec. 12.  The screening will take place at the HLWW Middle School located at 801 8th Avenue in Howard Lake starting at 8:30 a.m. Parents should call (320) 543-4600, Ext. 4332 for appointments.
