HOWARD LAKE, WAVERLY, WINSTED, MN – A “Race to the Top” presentation is among the agenda items for the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted school board meeting, set for 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9 at the middle school in Howard Lake.
According to the US Department of Education, the “Race to the Top” fund provides competitive grants to “encourage and reward states that are creating the conditions for education innovation and reform; implementing ambitious plans in the four education reform areas described in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA); and achieving significant improvement in student outcomes, including making substantial gains in student achievement, closing achievement gaps, improving high school graduation rates, and ensuring that students are prepared for success in college and careers.”

Other items on the agenda include a resolution canvassing the results of the special election, approval of the 2008-09 audit, and department reports, among other things.

Since it appears that these funds would be available only once (or for a limited duration), I strongly caution against making any changes to our educational programming that would require additional levee-based funding to maintain them once the ARRA funds are exhausted.
