HOWARD LAKE, WAVERLY, WINSTED, MN – A nearly 16 percent total levy increase from 2009 to 2010 for the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted School District raised a few questions at last Monday’s Truth in Taxation hearing, which took place during the regular school board meeting.

The board approved the final levy certification, with a couple changes from the proposed amount of $3,455,847, which was a $471,778 increase from last year.

The school’s budget committee recommended that the school defer the health and safety portion of the levy, in order to reduce the tax burden. The board made this change, which reduces the amount by $13 per $100,000.

Another minor change was to the community service levy portion. It was undervalued by the state’s estimate, so the board approved a $1,700 adjustment increase.
