Government is the largest ‘industry’ in Minnesota

Five Minnesotans work in the “non-farm” private sector for every sixth Minnesotan who works for the government. Government employees, according to the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Security’s Employment Report for July 2007, classifies the 395,297 workers as local government, local schools, state colleges, other state workers, non-postal federal workers and US Postal Service. Total non-farm employment is 2,797,802. This might be why it is difficult to vote out big-government, big-spending, big tax-politicians in Minnesota. There’s a very large population whose jobs and income-increases rely on them. At least around the Herald Journal area, there are lots of farmers to help balance out the votes.

“At least around the Hearld Journal area, there are lots of farmers…..” Really? Do you have any stats to back up that assertion?

The 2000 census does not even have a separate heading for those employed in the ag field. It is included with “forestry, fishing and hunting, and mining.”

Just because we still have acres out here being tilled does not mean there are as many people working the land as there was even twenty years ago. And let’s please not count hobby farmers. A couple of horses and chickens does not a farm make.
