WINSTED, MN – In April, Winsted resident Rose Heimerl discovered a sewer backup in her basement – caused by diaper wipes, a bathtub drain plug, and a 46-inch rod that had plugged the sanitary sewer system.

Although Heimerl wasn’t at fault, she was told her home on Second Street South has the lowest basement in the area, and that’s why she was affected.

A separate, similar incident also occurred in April at the home of Allen and Doreen Odenbrett, who live on Northgate Drive.

Allen Odenbrett and Rose Heimerl both attended the Winsted City Council work session May 21 to discuss the potential for compensation from the city. Look for the story in the Monday, May 27 edition of the Herald Journal.

Statewide, there was an average of 5.1 days rated suitable for fieldwork during the week. Topsoil moisture supplies improved to 0 percent very short, 11 percent short, 67 percent adequate, and 22 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies also improved to 5 percent very short, 25 percent short, 63 percent adequate and 7 percent surplus.

Corn planting advanced 52 percentage points to 70 percent complete, with 8 percent emerged. Despite the rapid planting activity during the week, progress still remains behind last year’s 97 percent and the normal planting pace of 84 percent. Depending on the area many corn growers in south central Minnesota reported rapid corn planting process and have completed their corn planting. If you have corn left to plant, University of Minnesota Extension planting date studies show that highest corn yields typically occur when corn is planted by early to mid-May. However, high corn yields can still occur if planting is completed prior to Memorial Day. According to Dr. Jeff Coulter, University of Minnesota Corn Extension Specialist, a study from 2009 to 2011 at Lamberton, Morris, and Waseca that was funded by the Minnesota Corn Growers Association, grain yield was still within 93% of the maximum if planting was completed by May 25.

Corn growers who have applied a corn pre-emergence herbicide benefited from recent rainfall events as incorporation in many cases occurred. A potential scenario of planting delays will be corn planted in fields where no soil-residual herbicide was applied. If the corn has not yet emerged, many soil-residual herbicides can be applied as originally planned but not all can be applied after corn has emerged. Products such as Fierce, Sharpen and Verdict must be applied before corn begins to emerge; applications of these products to emerged corn can result in significant corn injury.

Soybeans were 23 percent planted, compared with 76 percent last year and the 51 percent five-year average. The challenging spring has also delayed soybean planting. Growers who have not yet planted soybeans should plan to stick with full-season soybean maturities until June 10th. If planting is delayed until after June 10th, a soybean with a relative maturity (RM) of 0.5 units shorter than your original soybeans should be planted. For instance, if you live in central Minnesota and originally planted a RM 1.7 variety, by about June 10 switch to an early group I soybean (such as a RM 1.2). If planting is delayed until late June, switch to a soybean 1.0 RM earlier than what you would normally plant. The only caveat here is that producers who normally plant very long-season varieties need to make the switch earlier. Likewise, producers who normally plant short-season varieties are in a position to hold with their current varieties a bit longer.

Sugarbeets are 89 percent planted compared with 100 percent last year and the 84 percent average. Planting of other crops such as sweet corn, potatoes, green peas and dry beans also accelerated during the week but remain well behind normal.
