WRIGHT COUNTY, MN – The number of fatal vehicle crashes in Wright County so far this year is nearly double what it was at this same time last year, and the majority of crashes were preventable according to Safe Communities of Wright County.
The Fatal Review Committee of Safe Communities of Wright County met recently to review fatal crashes from the first six months of 2009. Nine people died on roads in Wright County during that time period, compared to five people during the same time last year. The most common contributing factors in these crashes are alcohol and the lack of seat belts or helmets.
“In Wright County, we see a higher incidence of alcohol use among our crash fatalities when compared to the state average,” said Lt. Dan Anselment of the Wright County Sheriff’s Office.
Minnesota crash data shows about one-third of crash fatalities statewide involve alcohol, while Wright County is closer to 50 percent. Wright County is listed as the sixth deadliest county in the state of Minnesota when it comes to alcohol-related fatalities.
Safe Communities of Wright County discovered a strong pattern during their recent review of ‘09 fatalities – the majority of crashes were completely preventable. By driving sober and wearing a seat belt, many of these crashes could have been totally avoided.
“Drivers need to know, their behavior behind the wheel can make a difference in their safety and others on the road,” says Pat Hackman, executive director of Safe Communities of Wright County. “Drivers need to recognize the risks associated with driving and take them seriously. If there is not a change in attitude and behavior, we could be headed for one of the deadliest years on record in this county.”
Four simple steps to safety
Driver’s who follow four simple actions can increase their safety when they are behind the wheel: always wear a seat belt, drive at safe speeds, drive sober and pay attention.
The Fatal Review Committee is made up of professionals from law enforcement, emergency response, engineering, and education. Participants include the Wright County Sheriff’s Office, Allina Medical Transportation, Wright County Highway Department, Wright County Public Health, and Safe Communities of Wright County.
The goal of this group is to review fatal crashes that happen in Wright County and identify commonalities, patterns, and trends that could be addressed to prevent future crashes. For more information, visit www.safecommunitiesofwrightcounty.org
