HOWARD LAKE, MN – Passengers of a fall color train ride from Minneapolis to Willmar will travel through Howard Lake Sunday, Oct. 11.
The 186-mile round trip excursion is being organized by the “Friends of the 261” in cooperation with Amtrak and BNSF Railway.
The fully restored Milwaukee Road 261, which was built at the height of World War II, is the centerpiece of Friends of the 261. The group is formally incorporated as Railroading Heritage of Midwest America, and its mission is to promote public understanding of the history of railroading in the Midwest.
This weekend’s fall color train ride has coach, first class, and premium class seats available at different price ranges. The first 250-mile round trip excursion is Saturday, Oct. 10, and goes from Minneapolis to Boylson, just south of Superior, WI, and back.
The Sunday, Oct. 11 excursion will travel over the former Great Northern Railway main line.
