DASSEL, MN – A 10-year-old from North Carolina visiting her grandparents has died in a sledding accident that occurred in Dassel Township Thursday.
The Meeker County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a sledding accident Dec. 27 at 3:33 p.m. and dispatched Dassel Rescue and Gold Cross Ambulance to the Craig and Barbara Kay residence at 24506 700th Avenue in Dassel Township, according to a press release.
Upon arrival, it was learned that the 10-year-old girl, visiting from Fayetteville, NC, had been sledding down a hill with other children in the backyard when her sled hit a stump and she was ejected from the sled, according to the release.
The girl was transported to Meeker Memorial Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital, the release stated.
The girl was identified as the daughter of Richard and Heather Barbaro of North Carolina. Heather is a 1989 Dassel-Cokato graduate, according to the girl’s aunt, Pam Sandstede.
The sheriff’s office continues to investigate this death, however, the children had been under adult supervision and it appears to be a tragic accident, the release stated.
