Wright County sheriff reports thefts, burglaries

WRIGHT COUNTY, MN – Since June 3, the Wright County Sheriff’s Office has responded to more than 20 reports of vehicle thefts, theft from vehicles, and residential burglaries in Otsego, Monticello, Monticello Township, Rockford, and Buffalo. The Howard Lake Police Department also reported a similar incident Monday.

The suspects have been targeting unlocked vehicles and have been gaining entry into residences by utilizing the garage door opener that they locate inside of those unlocked vehicles at or near the residence.

In the case of the Howard Lake incident, several items were stolen from inside the vehicle and occupied residence, and a different vehicle was stolen from the residence using keys left in its cup holder.

The sheriff’s office believes these crimes are being perpetrated by the same suspect(s) or group(s).

At about 6 a.m. Monday, Wright County Deputies responded to a burglary in progress in the City of Otsego. Two adult males were apprehended and arrested for burglary and related crimes. This case, as well as several others, are still under investigation.

The suspects in these incidents are believed to be involved in similar criminal activity in other jurisdictions within Minnesota. The Wright County Sheriff’s Office has been working with those other law enforcement agencies from seven different counties.

The sheriff’s office would like to remind everyone to lock vehicles and not leave valuables inside vehicles. If valuables must be left inside a vehicle, they should be put out of sight, preferably in a locked trunk or glove box. Individuals with garage door openers inside their vehicles, should make sure they are secured inside a locked compartment or placed in a location that is not visible from outside of the vehicle.

The suspects in these incidents have been working in small groups. The sheriff’s office encourages residents to call 911 if they see something suspicious in their neighborhoods.
