Birders and nature enthusiasts in northern Wright County are welcome to take part in Audubon’s annual bird count Saturday, Jan. 3. The count area includes Monticello, Maple Lake, Chatham, Buffalo, and the southern section of Silver Creek Township. Residents who want to participate in the count should contact the coordinator, Claudia Egelhoff, at cegelhoff@gmail.com, or call Lake Maria State Park at (763) 878-2325 for more information.
Visit the park’s web site, www.mnstateparks.info, for additional information. Participants can perform the count from their feeders or at locations that attract birds within the designated area. Results will be tallied at Lake Maria State Park’s nature center at approximately 4 p.m. In previous years, observers in northern Wright County identified more than 5,000 birds of 40 species, including trumpeter swans, bald eagles, and several types of hawks.
Lake Maria State Park is located approximately seven miles northwest of Monticello, 10 miles northeast of Annandale, or five miles north of Maple Lake on Wright County Highway 111.
