Commissioner Amy Wilde passed around a humorous photo that had been e-mailed to her from her son. It showed a group of bucks reclining under a trampoline. The bucks had their heads up, with the prongs on their antlers pointing at the bottom of the trampoline. The gag was that anyone who tried to bounce on the trampoline would get impaled on the bucks’ antlers. Parks Superintendent Myron Dvorak thought the grouping of bucks looked unnatural and maybe the photo had been doctored in Photoshop. Usually, a herd of deer consists mainly of does with one buck. Commissioner Dave Gabrielson said he has seen bucks recline like that in a group in nature, however.
Commissioner Jim Swenson recently returned from Texas. As he was driving north through Kansas on his way back to Minnesota, he was shocked at the huge number of deer he saw. Kansas didn’t seem like the kind of habitat deer would like. He had to drive extra carefully to avoid hitting deer crossing the road. He saw a vehicle on the side of the road that still had the deer impaled on the front grill. It must have been hit so hard, it didn’t bounce away from the front of the vehicle.
Later, Highway Engineer Ron Mortensen told how he was in the process of solving a ditch problem on Meeker County Ditch 15, which is southeast of Dassel. He thought maybe beavers had built a dam somewhere along it and the dam was preventing the ditch from draining properly. Someone will have to trap the beavers if that is the case, he said.
That reminded Gabrielson of how 24 coyotes were trapped in a small area just north of Darwin. He was surprised they trapped so many. He thought maybe there were only 24 coyotes in the entire county.
