I feel the school should use the monies to restore and expand the language department. With the glabal economy, our students need to be able to communicate in multiple languages.

I also feel the FACS (formerly known as Home Ec) classes should be fully restored and expanded. This could include more culinary training, family training, economic training (i.e. how to balance a check book, how to handle credit).

I would also like to see them add some science classes that would address learning research into things like alternative energy and improving our world. I know that one is poorly thought out, but just a thought.

If you are posting to this particular line, please read what the line is about. It isn't about attacking someone's ideas, it's about voicing those ideas.

Take care!

I feel as though people are getting upset about something that would have happened with or without the levy passing. Teachers would still be negotiating even if the lexy didn't pass. Each year the cost of living grows, therefore an increase in pay whether your a teacher or in any other profession is needed in order to keep up with today's living expenses. Why should teachers not receive a raise? I believe that most other jobs outside of education receive raises.

I agree whole heartedly with Terry Moore. We need to keep the kids interested in the school so that they stay in school and learn all that they can while they are there.

To Scott, perhaps I phrased my comment about the parenting class in a negative manner. However, I am well aware that there are a number of girls in particular of the student body that have no intentions of doing anything after school then being a wife and mother. Not that there is anything wrong with that, if that is the life they will be happy with. They just need different classes than the students that want to go on to further their education. I just don't want to see these students not get the education that they will use as well as other students. When the home economics classes were discontinued for a time, I think ALL the students suffered. Both boys and girls need to know how to take care of themselves in the kitchen if needed.

I was at another school a few years ago, and they offered a class with the dolls that monitor whether they were fed on time, diaper duty was attended to and how long they cried. There were boys and girls at the school with their "babies" taking care of them that evening. I thought how cool is that! I wish I would have had that experience when I was younger. It would have been beneficial to have that experience with a interactive "baby" before I became a parent. Not that this school can afford those dolls right now. But it maybe something they should consider in the future. Might do a lot for abstinence as well!

What do the students at the school want the school to add to the curriculum?

Scott,

You are remaining "faceless" too, as am I and DCMOM. From your blog entry, I am no sure if you are stating that having many children is "benifical" to the school district or not.

I am not saying that having a large family is bad as I am from a large family myself. However, to make a stupid statment "Plus, it can only mean better things for the school district, bringing in more money from the state when the children attend school and all!" is not in the best interest of the community or school district in this day in age.

I am religous and I am also taking a big leap that you may be from Upper Michigan, well.... enough said. Now back to the actual point of the blog, where should the levy money be spent.

I personnaly would like to see enhancements in the computer technology area as well as industrial arts. But the levy passed and it is up to the School Board. If you feel the board is not spending the money appropriately attend the board meetings and voice your opinion face to face.

"Then I think they should offer parenting classes for the students that get married the weekend after they graduate and then proceed to have a child every year or two thereafter." This is why I love the internet, people can make dumb comments like this and remain faceless.
Fact of the matter is, the ones that choose do this are probably more mature than you are, judging by your comments. What, exactly, is the problem with getting married out of high school? Many generations before theirs did just that, your parents probably did as well. Plus, it can only mean better things for the school district, bringing in more money from the state when the children attend school and all!

I agree that they should add at least one language, increase the number of AP and college classes at the school, and finally make sure we keep the bright kids interested and motivated to learn as much as we can. These bright kids are the ones who are going be in control of all of our futures and we need to make sure they are the best they can be.

For the high school - at least one foreign language, if not two, and look into AP courses to keep our kids here instead of going post-secondary and losing that state aid.

Middle school - Reading instruction, technology based courses (desktop publishing, web design, etc.)

Elementaries - Specialized instruction to help those who are having trouble keeping up. If you lose kids at that age, you run the risk of never getting them "back".

I believe that Languages should be the first thing added and or expanded.

Next, I would like to see them add a few fun electives like a digital photography class, art history class or a class where the talented artists we have in this area could come in and show the students how they accomplish their craft.

Then I think they should offer parenting classes for the students that get married the weekend after they graduate and then proceed to have a child every year or two thereafter.
