DASSEL, MN – After Dassel City Council took action suspending Dassel Fire Chief Dale Grochow for the period of 30 days, Grochow gave a letter of resignation as chief to the council. The action taken against Grochow was a decision made by the personnel committee following an alcohol-related incident in April at the fire station that ultimately led to a car accident involving one of the firefighters. Grochow stated he was unaware that the incident was taking place and to be reprimanded for that was unjust, which was his reasoning for stepping down as chief. Council Member Jason Benzing, who also serves on the personnel committee, defended the decision made by the committee saying they saw it as a leadership issue and referred to a policy the council put in place in March after a previous incident was reported. Read the full council story in Monday’s Enterprise Dispatch.

Good for Dale for standing up for his principles.
Once again elected officials show exactly why they have such low esteem in the eyes of the general public. The incident was dealt with by the department in a fair and judicious manner. Then the council got involved and did what elected bodies are so adept at doing - grandstanding.
I think the City Council had better look within themselves as well since they have dealt out this severe punishment. I am not saying that this incident should have been overlooked, but no one is perfect. And it sounds like it has been taken care of internally. Mistakes were made (and who hasn’t made a mistake during their lifetime), but we learn from those mistakes. Such is life. I hope that the City Council who feels they are perfect will never have to air any dirty laundry for something they did.
i already wrote my thoughts i see they are not posted yet!
i stand behind the city council.
the only ones “grandstanding” was the fire dept.
tossing a fit because they finally got caught.
they have been allowed to police themselves for too long. they have proven not to be trust worthy
good job city council
also the fire department DID NOT handle it.
hence why the city council had to take action.
Dale drew a check for being chief, the fire dept is a division
of the city.
it is not its own little bussiness.
