Cokato Museum to have open house Jan. 4

The Cokato Historical Society will host its ninth annual New Year’s Open House Sunday, Jan 4 from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Centennial Room of the library/museum building, located at 175 Fourth Street West in downtown Cokato. At this open house, the Finnish custom of “melting tin” will be demonstrated. This custom is a staple of many Finnish households on New Year’s Eve. Participants melt small pieces of tin over a stove in a cast iron lathe, then cast the melted tin into a pail of cold water, causing it to form unique shapes. Tradition states that these shapes will foretell what the upcoming year will bring.  Area residents familiar with this custom are especially encouraged to attend.  Light refreshments will be served.

The Cokato Museum is a cooperative effort of the city of Cokato and the

Cokato Historical Society. For more information, go to the museum’s web site, http://www.cokato.mn.us/cmhs/
