Third time’s not a charm for DC Regional Trail grant

DASSEL, COKATO, MN – The city of Cokato was informed late last week that it was not accepted for a Legacy fund grant to improve the Dassel-Cokato Regional Trail. This is the third time the grant has been applied for, but there were 99 applicants requesting more than $33 million dollars. The Parks and Trails Legacy Grant program only had $7.1 million to allocate for projects, and the DC Regional Trail did not make the cut.

The DC Regional Trail board will meet sometime in mid-January to discuss its options in moving forward with seeking funding. Read more in Monday’s Enterprise Dispatch.

Thrift store moves to Lundeen Interiors

web30COKATO, MN – Save and Share Thrift Shop is making its new home on the main level of Lundeen Interiors in Cokato. The store is expected to open Thursday, Jan. 12. Volunteers have been busy moving items, building dressing rooms, and installing shelving in the new location, which is one-and-a-half times the size of its former location behind The Grounds coffee shop. Lundeen Interiors has consolidated to the lower level and will still be open limited hours (to be posted in the new year), according to Paul Neighbors, president of Lundeen Interiors. The business is going well, Neighbors commented. It just didn’t need as much space as was available for the showroom.

Local law enforcement advises using extreme caution on lakes

Meeker County Chief Deputy Brad Lindgren said that ice conditions are very unusual for the beginning of winter and that people should still be using “first ice” precautions. “Know your lake and know your conditions,” Lindgren said, and advises drilling a hole every 10 feet with an auger to check depths. It’s also good to carry ice picks if one should fall through the lake.
Since last Thursday, three fish houses have been reported to have fallen through the ice on Meeker County lakes, two on Star Lake and one on Lake Jennie.
With there being no snow on the lakes to pack around the fish houses, Lindgren said that air is getting inside circulating the warm air (particularly when heaters are left on and from the radiant sun) and causing the holes to expand. “It’s a bit odd,” he said, to see fish houses sinking through the ice at the end of December when it’s more in the springtime when this occurs.
“Every lake is different and the conditions are ever-changing,” he said. “Be extremely cautious . . . use all the same precautions you would use in November.”

CSP applications due Jan. 13

United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) announced recently that applications will be accepted for the Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) until Friday, Jan. 13, 2012.
Producers interested in CSP should submit applications to their local NRCS office for the applications to be considered during the first ranking period of 2012.
CSP is offered in all 50 states, and the Pacific and Caribbean areas through continuous sign-ups.
The program provides many conservation benefits, including improvement of water and soil quality, wildlife habit enhancements, and adoption of conservation activities that address the effects of climate change.
Eligible lands include cropland, pastureland, rangeland, non-industrial private forest land, and agricultural land under the jurisdiction of an Indian tribe.
A CSP self-screening checklist is available to help potential applicants determine if CSP is suitable for their operation. The checklist highlights basic information about CSP eligibility requirements, contract obligations, and potential payments.
As part of the CSP application process, applicants will work with NRCS field personnel to complete the resource inventory using a Conservation Measurement Tool (CMT).
The CMT determines the conservation performance for existing and new conservation activities. The applicant’s conservation performance will be used to determine eligibility, ranking, and payments.
Visit the NRCS national web site at http://www.mn.nrcs.usda.gov/, and connect with the Wright County NRCS office at (763) 682-1933, ext. 3.
