COKATO, MN – Don Peroutka has been named the grand marshal of the Cokato Corn Carnival parade, which takes place Monday, Aug. 8 at approximately 6:20 p.m. (after the kiddie parade, which starts at 6 p.m.).
Peroutka was a dedicated member of the Corn Carnival Committee for 34 years, retiring last year. He served as treasurer his last seven years.
It is because of his year of service, and more, that Peroutka was chosen as the grand marshal of this year’s Corn Carival, said Mark Peterson of the Corn Carnival Committee.
Academic Year in America (AYA) is looking for Cokato families to host high school exchange students from all over the world.
This year, AYA is bringing hundreds of high school students to the US, to learn about American culture while living with volunteer host families and studying at high schools across the nation.
American families have the unique opportunity to learn about the student’s culture during this mutually-rewarding exchange.
AYA can help families find the ideal student for their home. The result is an enriching, lifelong relationship with a young person from abroad.
In addition, for families looking to learn more about a specific culture or language, hosting a student is a fantastic way to experience the world without leaving home.
Students are ages 15 to 18, and arrive with full medical insurance, spending money, and the hopes of experiencing life in America through the eyes of a caring host family. The students stay with their host for five or 10 months and attend the local high school.
Who can host a student through AYA? According to AYA Director Melanie French, an important aspect of the AYA program is that there are many types of people who can host.
“Just as there is no typical American family, there is no typical host family,” stated French. “Retirees, single parents, and young couples are all able to give an international student a good home. Some host families may not even have children of their own. Bringing a student into your home can mean giving the gift of culture to yourself, your family, your community – whomever would benefit from exposure to a new culture.”
To learn more about hosting an exchange student with AYA, call Stella at (800) 322-4678, ext. 5164, or email aya.info@aifs.org.

DASSEL, COKATO, MN – Although the state will be withholding an additional 10 percent of the funding promised to k-12 education in the state, it basically will only affect cash flow for the Dassel-Cokato School District, said DC Business Manager Tina Palmer. The school district will actually see about a $150,000 increase in state aid in 2012, but the shift in when the aid is received also has to be factored in, noted Palmer.
Normally, the state pays school districts 90 percent of their annual aid in one fiscal year, and a 10 percent settling-up payment in the following fiscal year. In 2010, the state changed the split to a 70/30 shift in aid payments to schools to help meet the state’s budget needs. This year’s state budget contains a 60/40 shift in aid payments to schools.
After running some cash flow numbers, everything looks as though it will be okay for now, Palmer said.
DASSEL, COKATO, MN – The contract for the materials needed for the vocational house construction class was awarded to Litchfield Building Center (LBC) in a 4-to-1 vote, with School Board Member Tracy McConkey voting against it.
The school district requested quotes from LBC, ProBuild of Cokato, and Simonson’s Lumber in Hutchinson. LBC submitted the lowest bid, which was $880 less than the next higher bid, said DC Business Manager Tina Palmer, recommending the board accept the low bid.The bid from LBC was $23,333; from ProBuild was $24,213; and from Simonson’s was $24,453.
Pointing out that ProBuild was a local business, McConkey noted an e-mail he had received from the Enterprise Dispatch about promotional posters for sports, and noticed that ProBuild was one of the sponsors. “I received a lot of response last year that was positive about ProBuild and their supporting our school,” McConkey stated.
