COKATO, HOWARD LAKE, MN – Highway 12 east of Cokato was completely closed for an hour after a crash Dec. 15.
Gerald Leimer, 68, of Eagan, was driving a 2005 Cadillac sedan eastbound when he crossed the center line near Littfin, according to the state patrol.
A school bus traveling westbound swerved to avoid a head-on collision with Leimer, and a vehicle behind the school bus swerved to the left to avoid a crash.
However, a Chevrolet pick-up traveling westbound behind the school bus and other vehicle could not avoid the Cadillac, and they crashed head-on, according to the state patrol.
Joseph McCanna, 61, of Eagan, the driver of the pickup truck, and his passenger, John Hendrickson, 20, of St. Paul, received minor injuries in the crash.
Leimer was transported to Ridgeview Medical Center, and then to Hennepin County Medical Center in stable condition.
Both vehicles were totaled.
After being completely closed for an hour, traffic on Highway 12 was able to pass through on one lane for about 40 minutes, after which the highway was completely open.
Responding to the accident were Cokato Ambulance, Howard Lake Police and Fire Department, the state patrol, and the Wright County Sheriff’s Department.
DASSEL, COKATO, DARWIN, MN – A buried fire hydrant is not what firefighters want to see if called for a fire. This is a friendly reminder for folks to clear snow from around the fire hydrants as they are shoveling sidewalks and driveways. A cleared fire hydrant means the firefighters can start fighting a fire in your neighborhood right away, rather than having to clear snow first.
COKATO, MN – Bloomberg’s Businessweek.com announced its top places in Small Town US to raise your kids and has named Cokato as the top town in Minnesota and Dassel as runner-up.
“With a country club, library, and award-winning schools, Cokato stands a step above most small towns,” the website said. “More than an hour from Minneapolis, Cokato shares many amenities with nearby (and runner-up) Dassel, including schools and a performing arts center. Cokato also boasts a museum and photography studio built in 1905 that is on the National Register of Historic Places.”
The places considered for the survey were where the median family income was within 20 percent of the state median. It was noted that the median family income in the US for 2009 was $61,082.
Some of the criteria emphasized were the number of schools within the community, school performance, cost of living, and crime statistics. They also accounted for such things as job growth, air quality, ethnic diversity, and access to the surrounding county’s parks, zoos, theaters, and other recreational facilities.
