COKATO, MN - The Cokato Museum and Historical Society invites the public to its 11th annual New Year’s Open House on Sunday, January 2, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Centennial Room of the Cokato Public Library.
As a part of this open house, a demonstration of the Finnish custom of “melting tin” will take place. Small pieces of tin are melted in an iron lathe then cast into a pail of cold water, where the tin forms unique shapes. Tradition holds that these shapes will foretell the upcoming year. Area residents familiar with this custom are especially encouraged to attend.
This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshment will be served.
For more information, please contact the museum at (320) 286-2427, on the web at www.cokato.mn.us, or check out their Facebook page.
The Cokato Museum is a cooperative effort of the City of Cokato and the Cokato Historical Society.
COKATO, MN – Icy road conditions were the cause of several accidents Tuesday including a two-vehicle crash west of Cokato on Highway 12.
The accident occurred around 10:27 a.m. when Eric John Hepner, 47, of Prior Lake, lost control of his vehicle, a 2003 Ford Ranger, and collided with Patrick Michael Petron, 40 of Dassel, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. Petron was driving a 2000 Ford pick-up truck, according to the report.
The accident resulted in non-life-threatening injuries. Petron’s passenger, Michelle Marie Petron, 40, Dassel, was air-lifted to Hennepin County Medical Center with possible internal injuries as a result from the crash, according to state patrol.
COKATO, MN – Owners of Cokato Video and Tanning Cindy and Dave Korbel of Maple Lake, are gearing up to move the business from its current location in Tower Center Mall to 120 Third Street West.
The exact date of the move has yet to be determined, but the plan is to be moved by the first of January, according to Cindy Korbel.
The video and tanning store will be sharing the building (next to Dr. Bruce Bohnsack’s office) with April Anderson, owner of Anderson’s Nursing Assistant and Home Health Aide Training center.
The move comes after the need to downsize the business, Korbel said.
“It’s like starting fresh again,” Korbel said, and is excited to move to the new location downtown.
With all the snow out there and more on the way, Rick Wozniak of Dassel sent in this photo of lighted snow towers he made with all of the snow around his yard.
How to make them: Find a large cardboard box and cut out both ends. Fill the box with snow and pack it down to get rid of air pockets in the snow. He recommends letting it set over night so the snow can harden be formed any way you like.Log Out
With this one, Wozniak used a coffee can (or one can use a 6-inch stove pipe) to cut holes in it. He cut the holes all the way through. To make the round lights, use an ice cream pail with at least 1 inch of water and food coloring.
Set out side and when frozen remove from pail and put into the cut out holes. Add candles to illuminate. Spray the colored windows with water to help freeze in place.
