Mn/DOT reminds public not to push snow onto roads

WILLMAR, MN — The Minnesota Department of Transportation reminds the public that it is unlawful to deposit snow on or next to a public highway or street.

Minnesota law and many local ordinances prohibit the plowing, blowing, shoveling or otherwise placing of snow onto public roads. This includes the ditch and right of way area along roads.

Violations are considered misdemeanors, but civil penalties also apply if the placement of snow creates a hazard, such as a slippery area, frozen rut or bump, that contributes to a motor vehicle or pedestrian crash. The civil liability can extend to both the property owner and the person who placed the snow.

Improperly placing snow on or near a public road creates hazards including drainage problems, drifting, sight obstructions and unsafe access. Special attention should be made to keep crosswalks, intersections, entrances and exits clean and unobstructed.

Mn/DOT maintenance crews plow and maintain about 135,000 miles of streets and highways in Minnesota including 12,000 miles of state highways.

Paying for end-of-life care

SUBMITTED BY JUDY LOECKEN
LITCHFIELD AREA HOSPICE

The nation spent last year watching Capitol Hill struggle with Health Care Reform. Now that reform has been signed into law, questions of how to pay for it are a major issue. Concerns over these costs are shared not only by elected officials but by almost every family across the country. Many baby boomers are providing care for their aging parents just as they are facing their own health care issues.

Yet, for almost 30 years, the Medicare Hospice Benefit has provided a model for financing end-of-life care that can bring great relief and support to families during one of life’s most difficult times.

This benefit covers virtually all aspects of hospice care with little out-of-pocket expense to the patient or family. As a result, the financial burdens often associated with caring for a terminally-ill patient are lifted.

Hospice care also offers supports to the loved ones of the patient; this brings an added level of relief to the dying person, knowing their loved ones are being cared for as well.

Interim pastor joins Cokato Evangelical Lutheran Church

COKATO, MN – Evangelical Lutheran Church of Cokato will welcome Rev. Dr. Ben Johnson, who will serve as interim pastor beginning Wednesday.
“I’m really looking forward to it,” Johnson said, who is originally from the Alexandria area and currently resides in St. Cloud.
An interim pastor is one that is recommended by the synod and approved by the congregation and typically serves about one to two years there, Johnson explained.
Johnson studied at Gustavus Adolphus College, the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago, Harvard University, and Oxford University.
Johnson has also served as a seminary professor and dean in Ohio, as senior pastor of Salem Lutheran Church in St. Cloud, and as professor of the Lutheran Bible Institute in California. Since returning to his home state, Johnson has done interim ministry in Starbuck, Norway Lake, Evansville, and Chokio.
“I really love to experience a new place,” Johnson said, noting he is particularly excited about working in this congregation and community because of its rich history.
