On Friday August 27, 2010 at 4:18 p.m. the Meeker County Sheriff’s Office received a 9-1-1 call in reference to a garage on fire at the address of 123 2nd Street North, Darwin. Upon arriving on scene the Sheriff’s Office spoke to Mary Koenen, age 36, who is the renter at this property, and verified that all members were out of the residence and safe. While Dassel Fire and Rescue were extinguishing the fire, the Sheriff’s Office along with the assistant Fire Chief from Dassel Fire and Rescue, spoke to a 14 year old step son who lives there in reference to the fire. At this time, the 14 year old admitted to playing with matches shortly before the fired happened. He stated that he thought he put the fire out, but did admit to burning a cardboard box in the Northwest portion of the garage, which is where the fire appeared to have been started. Harvey Riebe, of Darwin, owns the property and estimates the garage to be valued at $10,000 and is a total loss. Mary Koenen estimates the damaged property inside the garage to be valued at $3,000 - $4,000.
This case is under investigation by the Meeker County Sheriff’s Office and the Dassel Fire Department.

MEEKER COUNTY, MN – Meeker County Sheriff Jeff Norlin is making the public aware of the latest scam/theft attempt that has occurred in Meeker County.
At least two persons in the county reported receiving phone calls either as hospital staff or others related to a critical incident, that a family member has been involved in an accident and are at a specific hospital. The resident is then asked to respond to the hospital immediately.
In both of these cases, the residents took the proper course of action which is to: Not respond to the hospital right away, verify the information and call the Sheriff.
If any resident in Meeker County receives a call of this type, they should do the same, and especially call the sheriff’s office or your local police department right away.
Its emergency communications center can assist in verifying if the call is real, and a deputy or officer can respond, check the area and gather additional information from you. It may be just a prank call, or worse, a potential thief waiting for you to leave your house unoccupied for a known period of time to commit a burglary.
