Cokato Historical Society receives grant for mural restoration

COKATO, MN - The Cokato Historical Society is pleased to announce the receipt of a grant award of $5,760 by the Central Minnesota Arts Board (CMAB) for restoration work on the historic mural that adorns the west exterior wall of the Cokato Museum.
Designed over a several month period in 1996-97, and officially dedicated on May 5, 1997, this mural stands as the only significant piece of public art in western Wright County. Measuring 416 sq ft., the mural contains five distinct images taken from the Gust Akerlund Studio photo collection. Each image represents a segment of life in the Cokato area during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
This restoration work will be conducted by Fergus Falls-based artist Lance Albers, the original designer and creator of the mural. This was his first large-scale outdoor work, and Albers feels a special ownership to the mural. Albers hopes to begin his work shortly after the Independence Day holiday and be completed by the end of September. To facilitate with restoration, sections of the mural will be removed, worked on by the artist, and then re- installed. As each section is re-done, the framework to which the mural is mounted will be inspected and improved as needed.
This activity is funded in part by the Minnesota arts and cultural heritage (aka “Legacy”) fund through a grant from the CMAB as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008. he Central Minnesota Arts Board (CMAB) for restoration work on the historic mural that adorns the west exterior wall of the Cokato Museum.
