MYSTERY, MN – The Enterprise Dispatch web site is hosting a weekly Internet mystery photo contest in which a photo is taken of something in the area.
Anyone who correctly guesses the identity of the photo is added to a monthly drawing for a free subscription to the newspaper.
Go ahead and guess! Those who guess correctly first receive bragging rights.

DASSEL, MN – Dassel Elementary first graders participated in the annual bike rally May 21, which included bike inspections, an obstacle course, a bike ride and much more. Students also received bike helmets from the Cokato-Dassel Rotary Club, water donated by Meeker Memorial Clinic, and commemorative t-shirts. Also, eight lucky winners received bikes. The winners are (pictured front to back) Luke Kraemer, Jennah Keith, Brett Ryyanen, Alyssa Carlen, Derek Miller, Juliana Graff, Ethan Aho, and Lucian Casillas. All those who donated inclued the Cokato-Dassel Rotary, Cokato Lions, Charger Chiropractic, Peterson Pharmacy, Dassel Elementary Teachers, Randt Oil, Cokato Motors, Howard Page, Stritesky Trucking, Meeker Memorial Clinic, and Gordy Prochaska.
The Stoughton Folk Dancers, a group of 20 junior and senior high school students that put athleticism into their Scandinavian folk dancing program, includes a former resident of Dassel, Matthew Gelster-Jones.
Stoughton, WI is an early Norwegian settlement 30 miles south of Madison, WI, and is now home to many ethnic groups. They continue to celebrate Norway’s Independence Day, May 17. (Norway has had independence from foreign rule for 105 years.)
Stoughton, WI hosts one of the largest Syttende Mai (May 17) celebrations in the US.
During this three-day celebration in a town with a population of only 15,000 people, between 40,000 and 50,000 people visit to take in the many festivities.
Many come to watch the Stoughton Folk Dancers. This year, the Dassel Leikarring folk dancers were invited to entertain, as well.
A new sound system, made possible by a grant from Southwest Minnesota Arts & Humanities Council, enhanced the performances, at a street performance and in one of the local churches.
Dassel Leikarring dancers specialize in traditional dances from the Scandinavian countries. Varying ages and ethnic backgrounds are present in this group.
The Dassel Leikarring’s upcoming Minnesota performances include: Mora, for its Midsummer Festival, Friday, June 18; the Mushroom Building in Dassel, Thursday, Aug. 26; at Green Lake Sunday, Sept. 19, for Nordfjordlaget’s 100th anniversary; and in Waconia, Saturday, Sept. 25, for the Nordic Music and Dance Festival.
MEEKER COUNTY, MN – Ben Aho of Watkins recently announced his candidacy for Meeker County sheriff.
Aho is currently residing in the Watkins area with his wife of 15 years, Tonja, and their six children.
Aho is currently an investigator for the Litchfield Police Department.
He was hired by Litchfield in 2007, and within six months he was promoted to investigator, where he has investigated numerous complex cases, including homicide, sexual assault, drugs, gangs, and burglary cases.

COKATO, MN – The Cokato Finnish-American Historical Society will host an open house Saturday, May 29. Event will be from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Temperance Corner, located 3 miles north of Cokato on County Rd 3.
Martin Kotila will be the honored veteran at the noon program. The PowerPoint presentation “HELPING HAND From America to Finland” will be shown as part of the program. All historical buildings will be open.
DASSEL, DARWIN, COKATO, KINGSTON, MN – Cokato will observe Memorial Day Monday, May 31 with a rifle salute at 7:30 a.m. followed by the Raising of Colors at Veterans Park.
The parade will begin at 10:15 with a program to follow at the Cokato Elementary auditorium with speaker Matt Lehto, a 1992 DC grad who recently returned from serving in the Marine Corp in Iraq.
Dassel will observe Memorial Day beginning with a parade at 8:45 a.m. and a program following in the Dassel Community Cemetery. The speaker will be Dean Jennissen, DC High School principal and National Guard veteran.
Refreshments will be served following at the Dassel History Center and Ergot Museum.
Darwin’s program will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Hantge Funeral Chapel. The keynote speaker will be Tim Sanken, a retired US Army colonel. A balloon release and refreshments will follow.
Kingston will host its Memorial Day program at the former Kingston Apostolic Lutheran Church at 10 a.m.
