DASSEL, MN – Six Dassel and Cokato churches will be packing food for Kids Against Hunger, a humanitarian food-aid organization from New Hope, Saturday, April 17.
The event will take place at the Dassel History Center’s Community Room (Ergot Museum building).
The goal of the event is to raise and pack $4,000 in food, and Karl Klemmer, youth director at Dassel Covenant Church, is confident the goal will be met.
The youth commission at Dassel Covenant Church is organizing the event and, depending on its success, may someday open the event to the public, Klemmer said.
Packing will be in two shifts, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The churches participating are Dassel Covenant, Gethsemane Lutheran, Dassel Church of Christ, Lake Jennie Covenant, First Baptist Church of Cokato, and Evangelical Lutheran Church of Cokato.
At 23 cents a meal, volunteers will pack more than 17,000 meals.
Since the earthquake that struck Haiti, Kids Against Hunger has sent 10 million meals to help with the relief effort, according to Amanda Stowell with the humanitarian organization.
The meals packaged are “highly nutritious” and are vitamin-fortified soy rice casseroles.
It is estimated that one person who spends two hours packing food, along with $100 for the ingredients, will provide a child with enough food for one year.
Volunteers from churches, schools, businesses, and service organizations pay for the ingredients and volunteer their time to pack the meals.
