UPDATE: DARWIN, MN – The Meeker County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a case of vandalism involving six broken windows on the gazebo surrounding the ball of twine in Darwin.
A property damage report was taken Feb. 20 at 7:36 p.m. from an anonymous caller, according to the Meeker County Sheriff’s Department.
At first, the department suspected the windows may have been broken due to the weight from the snow on the roof or shifting of the building.
After examining the windows, the department found exactly where the windows had been struck, according to Sheriff Jeff Norlin.
The department is still determining whether it was a punch or a projectile that caused the glass windows to break.
Because the glass is between support posts that connect to the roof, there is no pressure on the glass at all, said Roger Werner, Twine Ball Museum director.
Replacing the windows will cost about $1,400, he said.
The case remains under investigation and anyone with information is asked to call (320) 693-5400.
DASSEL, MN – The hard work and dedication that made the idea of the Dassel Area Food Shelf come alive was commended during a ribbon-cutting ceremony Feb. 20.
Pastor Doug Pierce began by thanking those who helped make the food shelf possible especially Larry Oberg, who “got the idea rolling.”
Dassel Council, including Mayor Mike Scanlon; Paul and Betty Opsahl, the Howard Page Family Foundation, and the many volunteers, were among those who were thanked.
Pierce asked others to tell people and let them know the food shelf is there to help.
March is food shelf month and both the Dassel and Cokato food shelves will be promoting their services around the community, Pierce said.
The Dassel food shelf is open Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Thursdays from 3 to 7 p.m.
For requests, call (320) 693-7661 or email needfood@charter.net

COKATO, MN – To promote reading at home, Cokato Elementary hosted its first FRED Night, Fathers Reading Every Day, Feb. 22.
Children in kindergarten through second grade lined up with their fathers or male caregivers to get free slices of Godfathers pizza to begin the night.
There was a total 59 fathers and/or male care givers and 76 students in attendance, according to Ryan Weinandt, second grade teacher who coordinated the event.
After dinner, participants gathered into three smaller groups where books were read by guest readers Mark Dolan, third grade teacher; Supt. Jeff Powers, and Weinandt.
Those in attendance also went home with a free book entitled “What Dads Can’t Do.” Such things the book highlights which dads can’t do are walking across the street without holding their child’s hand or hiding well for hide-and-go-seek.
“It was a big success and a lot of fun,” Weinandt said.
“It does show how important academics are in our community,” he added.
The goal of the FRED event is to develop time spent between fathers and their child from the time they can begin to start reading, Weinandt explained. It focuses on the beginning stages of reading and importance of reading with your child at that time, he said.
The FRED event was paid for by funds received from the Cokato Dairy Queen, which donates a percentage of its Wednesday evening sales to the elementary schools.

DARWIN, MN – The Meeker County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a property damage incident involving broken windows of the display case surrounding the ball of twine.
A property damage report was taken Feb. 20 at 7:36 p.m. that six to eight windows were broken.
Currently, the department is not looking at this as a vandalism case since no projectiles were found, according to Sheriff Jeff Norlin.
“At this time, we just don’t know,” he said, adding there is no evidence that it is criminal.
A possibility is the weight from the snow on top of the roof, however, Jill Holte, Darwin’s public works director, doesn’t believe there was enough snow to do the damage.
