The popular Cash for Clunkers program was suspended as of midnight Thursday. It was supposed to continue through Nov. 1. Reports Friday said the $1 billion program would be good through that day and ways to keep the program going would be discussed.
According to CBS News, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said the government is working “to assess the situation facing what is obviously an incredibly popular program.” “Auto dealers and consumers should have confidence that all valid CARS transactions that have taken place to date will be honored,” Gibbs said.
Local dealers received an e-mail from Jim Schutjer of the Minnesota Auto Dealers Association Friday telling them to stop doing new Cash for Clunkers sales.
The decision to suspend the plan came after auto dealers warned the government today that it was in danger of losing track of how many trades had actually been made, according to Schutjer.
“We’re really in limbo right now,” said Marc Keith, finance manager for Holt Motors. “We can’t deliver a car and have them drive it for 10 to 14 days, and tell them we need it back,” he said. For now, the Cokato dealership will continue to do the paperwork and tell the customer they won’t be able to pick the vehicle up until the dealer gets the money.
