BUFFALO, MN – A problem with a belt in a mechanical room at the Wright County Government Center in Buffalo caused a brief evacuation Tuesday, reported KDUZ Radio.
Wright County Sheriff’s Department Dispatch says smoke from the overheated belt prompted officials to evacuate the building late Tuesday morning as a safety precaution. Most workers were allowed back into the building within about an hour after a complete safety check was completed. There were no reports of any injuries, and no major damage other than the rather thick smoke related to the mechanical problem.
DASSEL-COKATO, MN - Dassel-Cokato students are showing their support by taking a day from their spring break and hopping on a bus to Fargo/Moorhead area to help with sandbagging efforts Wednesday. According to Jeff Neutzling, head coach of the boys baseball team confirmed he and Mark Peterson are taking a group of volunteers including the boys’ baseball and girls’ softball teams early Wednesday morning and holding off practice until Thursday.
Update: According to Neutzling, they received a phone call Tuesday night saying there was enough volunteersand weren’t needed and therefore did not go to Fargo to help with the sandbagging efforts. According to Peterson, there was some miscommunication between officials in Moorhead and Fargo, because volunteers were still needed in Fargo. Practice continued Wednesday despite disappointed coaches and team members who were expecting to go and help. People are planning to go Friday including some local churches, Peterson said.

DASSEL, MN - The Dassel Area Historical Society is hosting a new exhibit featuring found Native American artifacts from around the Dassel area with some dating back more than 8,000 years. Bob Munter along with Arnie Ruotsinoja, both Dassel natives, conducted a series of archealogical studies. They found 25 new sites in the Dassel area that were added to the six already documented sites in Meeker County through the Office of the State Archealogist. The exhibit features three of those sites; the Peterson site near Lake Jennie; the Nelson-Ratike site near Lake Stella and Washington south of Darwin, and the Rosander site near the Darwin/Dassel Hill. Exhibit open through Red Rooster Days.
Local developments are the subject of a lengthy article written by the Star Tribune Monday. In the article, Summit Hills of Dassel, The Preserve in Montrose, and Tuscany Village of Watertown are three of several developments financed by Lakeland Construction of Eagan. Lakeland engaged in risky lending practices and was unregulated by the government since it is not a bank and would lend to land speculators and home builders, not home buyers. Now, the partially finished projects sit undone and in disarray as home owners there pick up the pieces.
