‘Dr. Banjo’ coming to Ostmark Lutheran Church

Watkins, Minnesota – Ostmark Lutheran Church (ELCA) of rural Watkins, Minnesota, is happy to welcome “Dr. Banjo”, Bradley Reynolds, to the area on Sunday, August 10, 2008.

Reynolds has played the banjo for 31 years, full time for the last 21 years, performing first in the Midwest and now nationally. He and his “Company Band” blend bluegrass with new music styles.

Raised in Bloomington and now living in Stillwater, Minnesota, Reynolds has a degree from the University of Minnesota’s Institute of Technology and began playing the banjo in high school.

He will bring his unique worship style to Ostmark, 32721 – 680 Avenue, Watkins, as he leads morning worship for the congregation and guests. The service begins at 10:30 a.m.

Following the worship service, a pork chop dinner will be served by Ostmark’s Men’s Club. The public is welcome to attend both the worship service and dinner. For more information, call the church at 693-8450.

The Cokato Corn Carnival is coming. What are you excited for?

I can’t wait to eat fresh corn-on-the-cob. I am ashamed to say I haven’t had any yet this year, then again, fresh local corn might not have been ready until just recently. The only thing I don’t like about eating corn down at the park is eating the buttery, salty, and tasty mess in front of everyone. I’ll have to go sit under one of those trees and face the other way. No, it’s actually not that big of a deal. But I would recommend the corn carnival committee supplying wet naps.

Fairest of the Fair crowned Sunday

Three girls were crowned during the Wright County Fair coronation in Howard Lake July 27.

Johannah Comee of Buffalo was crowned the new Fairest of the Fair, with Afton Kielsa of Albertville being crowned princess. Princess Danielle Mazer of Monticello nominated as Miss Congeniality.

The outgoing royalty is shown with the newly crowned royalty (with sashes).

Do something for a stranger

My favorite radio station 98.5 KTIS is once again doing their Drive Thru Difference Day on Friday Aug. 8. I have not yet had a chance to participate in this event as Howard Lake does not have any drive-thrus (except the bank, which doesn’t work for this event — see below), but I am determined that this time I will. ATS employees walk for the cure

Small companies in and around Dassel have banded together to cure breast cancer. How? One step at a time.
Ronda Sarner Anderson and Susan Ritterholz, employees at American Time & Signal Company, are walking 60 miles throughout the Twin Cities in September.
Ronda’s mom, Bev, died of breast cancer at age 51 and Ritterholz is a 13-year breast cancer survivor. Each walker is required to raise $2,200, so the fundraising started early in 2008. Continue reading ‘ATS employees walk for the cure’

A total solar eclipse is set for Friday, Aug. 1

A total solar eclipse — the first in nearly two and a half years — should be visible Friday, Aug. 1 along a narrow track that will start over the Northwest Passage of Canada spanning a long path toward China. On that date, the sun will be obscured to people who live over a small slice of northeastern North America, as well as several other continents, says skywatching columnist Joe Rao of Yahoo News.
